FitzGerald. Purpose: To review with Corporate Management, Manufacturing, Sales, Technical and Quality Control Departments the current status of non-asbestos program. The objectives of this review were: 1. Establish a clearer understanding among all departments as to the requirements of the recent E.P.A. standard as well as OSHA standards relative to use of asbestos fibres. 2. In light of this understanding, evaluate its effect on current development program for asbestos-free products. Can we temporarily pursue a reduced asbestos product to buy time for the development of an asbestos-free product? 3.- Develop a course of action for the next phase of production testing. Conclusions: 1. We can and will pursue a reduced asbestos product as well as a paper containing recipe to improve suspension system of non-asbestos recipe. 2. Competition is using paper recipes and product is working satisfactorily at several accounts. 3. Certain engineering improvements need to he made to the K-4 (See Action To Be Taken). 4. We shall continue to use P-31 as needed to keep the customer supplied with parts until an.acceptable product is developed. 1542 Non-Asbestos Meeting Tuesday, 5/1/73 May 1, 1973 Page 2 Action To Be Taken: JCM & AS .1 Try 5273B recipe at redueed solids content - approximately 15%. (2nd shift, 5/1/73) AS 2. Develop recipe containing no asbestos but 2% paper. 1 AS 3. Develop recipe containing* less than 1% asbestos and reduced paper (approximately 0.5%). AS 4. Develop recipe containing no paper and 1-2% asbestos. AS 5. Evaluate the effect of gelling RM 117 (bentonite) and adding gel to puiper in EP 5273B. AS 6. Evaluate the effect of mixture of fibreglass staple lengths on improved filter cake characteristics. RP 7. Engineering to review and report on methods and cost of water metering on pulping platform. RP/BH 8. Engineering to proceed with the modification of K-4 to blow back the form and metering tank to the holding during each cycle. PAP 9. Explore the possibility of appointing a Safety Engineer to assist Manufacturing and Sales in the non-asbestos program. JCM 10. At least once during each production run on K-4 stop production and examine blow- tank for settling out of * solids. GHF 11.
