1945 - At the request of Brakeblok - Detroit management, this plant was surveyed because of union agitation. The Prudential Life Insurance Co. had classified employees in this plant as engaged in a hazardous asbestos industry and had increased the life insurance premiums of those employees subscribing. We were able to show that no asbestos hazard existed in the plant and insurance premiums were reduced and refunded on the basis of the findings of the industrial hygiene survey. Three visits were made to the plant to check toxic hazards and asbestos, lead formate, potassium, etc. Skepticism of union stewards was overcome by conference presided by Dr. Hamlin, who frankly stated the position of the company, explained the medical and industrial hygiene program, and gave a resume of characteristics of asbestosis & lead poisoning. ' Asbestos samples were collected, counted and analyzed for asbestos in 1945. 1947 - Asbestos samples were analyzed this year also. 1952 - Dr. Hamlin presented a paper entitled "Administration of Workmen's Compensation Loss as they Relate to the Pneumoconiosis" at the Seventh Saranac Symposium at Saranac Lake, NY Sept. 22-26, 1952.
