Hydrazine, a Du Pont classified experimental carcinogen. Is used In the water treatment area. Air samples to quantify personnel exposure during this work were last taken In March, 1978. Engineering Standard S12T recomnends air monitoring each 6 months (minimum) for such chemicals. It is recommended that the resample frequency In S12T be followed. b. Although an eye wash station had been tested on 6/26 (today) In the water treatment building, the left stream was nearly plugged and did not converge properly. Repair is recommended. Although Instructions which require 15 minutes flushing when chemicals splash into the eyes were posted at the' building entrance, personnel were uncertain about adequate eye flush times. Retraining Is recommended. (One employee indicated that he would "flush until his eyes quit burning." This may not be adequate to protect the employee from eye damage.) c. Asbestos gloves are still available for use with the Shop hot suit equipment. The use of non-asbestos substitutes is recommended. d. Acme respirators (approximately 15} with ammonia cartridges are stored (above office area) in the Shop protective equipment cabinet. These respirators are no longer authorized for use on the Site and should be removed and properly discarded. e. Half-mask respirators with charcoal cartridges installed are stored throughout the area for emergency escape. Although the masks and cartridges are stored in a sealed polyethylene bag, the cartridges have a finite effective life. Area personnel were not aware of a routine cartridge replacement frequency. It is recommended that cartridges be replaced periodically, perhaps quarterly, or more often if necessary to maintain fresh cartridges for personnel escape. 19. Aniline Area - General a. A sink provided in the designated food consumption area is used for both personnel washup before lunch and flushing clean and possibly contaminated process equipment. It Is recommended the sink be used only for personnel hygiene.^ b. Stored face shields throughout the area need more attention to insure clean liness and proper storage. The face shield at the equipment wash down pad was opaque and unserviceable. c. A high shrill noise (which began this am} was noted at the abater waste heat boiler. The noise level should be reduced if possible and measured to deter mine if a temporary hearing protection area is necessary. d. A nitrobenzene sample point valve in the centrifuge area was leaking and should be repaired. e. An aniline leak on the purge column feed pump needs repair. RCC/fb DUP 0502317 DU 001961
