Joe, Heads up. They aren't asking the right people. I assume NAVFAC environmental needs to be involved. v/r, Steve Fletcher, P.E. Fire Protection Engineer NAVSEA HQ, SEA 05P5 202-781-0932 ...... Lindsay, Also, do you have any approved disposal methods for the AFFF? We have large quantities of 1999 manufactured AFFF sitting in several warehouses we need to dispose of, and are looking for options besides shipping it off to a collection site. We also recently had the following email: Was hoping to discuss the potential for PFOS in salt water fire suppression system and who our reach-back support is to determine what acceptable concentration limits might be for ocean disposal? A KTR is here to perform maintenance work on a PFOS-AFFF fire suppression system and in order to that had planned to drain all the salt-water in it, into the ocean to begin work. When they looked at the salt-water lines they saw foam and immediately called us asking what they should do (below is our recommendation which we articulated in a meeting yesterday). We are taking a conservative approach as PFOS is persistent in the environment, bioaccumulates, and we have seen how even small spills/sheens can get public attention quickly. Right now we need to sample to know if the water is contaminated; however no one here knows what the 'safe' level for an aquatic disposal would be, nor what method detection limit is possible in a salt-water sample. Ultimately we will provide a recommendation, but the decision of what to do will be made by leadership (DLA/ICO/?). Is it possible to obtain a 'waiver' for release? I don't know of any treatment methods that we can perform here, but do you know who might have recommendations or expertise? Until the sample results come in which we anticipate taking 2 weeks, we can't recommend a disposal method. Meanwhile the contractor is on-site to perform work and might all be flying home until this is resolved, which impacts DLA's MILCON schedule. I spoke to our resident ACOE manager and he said this type of fire suppression system was a GOJ requirement and not a US-requirement and he imagines will be a sensitive issue. I've also alerted our PWO (who I believe is planning to give our ICO a heads up). US00002880 Your guidance would be greatly appreciated. Hi Julie, Sorry for the delay - I'm slowly catching up on emails from being out of the office. I believe your question would be more appropriately answered by NAVSEA 05P5 (the AFFF MILSPEC owner). I've copied several people should be able to help you out. V/R, Lindsay ...... Original Message....... Ms. Nehm, Your assistance would be requested in providing a list of AFFF safer firefighting formulations for use overseas. If you have a list of products and/or Supply/product numbers it would be greatly appreciated.
