Dear Mr. Cutler: Following the cable sent on June 1 advising that possibly a bad shipment of lap could be causing your troubles, we received back at Manheim a sample of the lap. It was determined that, despite the earlier feeling, the lap was perfectly fine and typical of our regular production quality. This has convinced us that the problems you are encountering are almost surely caused by the miniature card being improperly set up. These cards should be regularly maintained in order to produce quality insulated wire. We are sending to you today a copy of a blueprint which gives in great detail our recommendations for the settings between each of the rolls and the types of card clothing that should be used on each of the rolls. We recommend that you obtain a set of feeler gauges and check the settings between each of the rolls as noted in the blueprint. We also recommend that you check the RPM of each of the rolls on the card. Recommendations for speed are also on this blueprint. Most of the roll settings are noted to be 28 using the card gauge. In the United States, a 28 card gauge actually measures .014". Please also note that we have underlined in red pencil the fact that the fancy roll is to be set in and is not a clearance measurement. The easiest way to determine that the fancy is adjusted to 1/16" into the main cylinder, for instance, is to use talc or chalk loaded into the cylinder. By turning the fancy against the cylinder and setting it into the cylinder, you should remove the talc in a horizontal pattern of between 3/4" and 1" in width across the cylinder. We also note that you have been purchasing our Style 9815--2000 grain asbestos lap which is ASTM Grade A. There is really nothing wrong with using that lap, although most electrical applications require only an Underwriters Grade (80 percent asbestos minimum) for asbestos insulation. We are arranging to forward today from our plant in Manheim, Pennsylvania the following samples: one package Spec. The 9836--2000 Grain is the actual lap used successfully By Cerro Wire & Cable Division in New Haven, Connecticut. We sent some 1500 Grain also which can be successfully used being a somewhat lighter burden on the card. The same wall thicknesses can be obtained, however, merely by speeding up the feed rolls in the back. The 9812--2000 grain is representative of our "old style" multi-sliver lap. This is made with the identical same mix as the 9836. We feel 9836 is far superior since it eliminates any possibility of knots or missing silvers. The one-piece construction has been most widely accepted in the United States. We trust that all these suggestions plus the recommendations of the blueprint will enable you to arrange your card settings so that you can,properly card the asbestos onto wire and produce satisfactory wall thicknesses and high quality end products.
