Box 3311 Miami, Florida Res Pile C-2 Dear Mr. Toomey: In accordance with our previous correspondence, I am sending you herewith a report of the results obtained in our analysis of materials which you supplied us. From these analyses you will note that most of the lead which is present In the gasoline and in the filters Is non-volatile In type. On the other hand some portion of it is volatile, and this portion would give rise to lead exposure even without agitation and suspension of dry dusts in the atmosphere. Fortunately the actual quantities of volatile material were low and, therefore, this type of exposure would not be very great from a practical point of view. No doubt you are aware of the fact that the non-volatile material when suspended In the air and Inhaled, would give rise to considerable exposure. We have not taken the trouble to determine the precise nature of the non-volatile lead compounds. It would be very interesting to know but in the present status of the problem, we have not felt that we wore justified in carrying out rather elaborate analyses that would be required to establish these facts. Again may I say that if we can be of any further service to you, we shall be glad to do so, and If any questions arise concerning what it might be best to do at remote points where this problem still Is to be dealt with, we should be pleased to be advised of the nature of your problem and will be glad to give any assistance that Is possible. I refer here particularly to the subject of cleaning tanks and, or, other equipment at South American depots. I have rather 2- ~ close contacts with representatives of the Associated Ethyl Company Limited in South America, and I am 3ure that through them we could provide assistance if this would be useful.
