In that year, Americans recycled and composted: 44.400.000 tons of paper and paperboard, or 49.7% of all the municipal solid waste that was recycled and composted 2.990.000 tons of glass, or 3.3% of all the municipal solid waste that was recycled and composted 3.170.000 tons of plastics, or 3.5% of all the municipal solid waste that was recycled and composted 700.000 tons of aluminum. As a whole, metals accounted for 8.8% of all the municipal solid waste that was recycled and composted 1.580.000 tons of steel packaging.
