The following is, therefore, a discussion on the primary protective cell of the serosa in asbestosis of the lungs, as well as an attempt to show correlation between both diseases. W.K.,^age 53 worked in an asbestos factory from 1919-1951. He worked for 26 years on the spinning-wheel (spinner) for coarse yarns and as an asbestos spinner. His maximum exposure to dust was during the years 19191930 and 1940-45 -- a total of 16 years. In 1937 he was admitted to the Charity (Chariti) hospital in Berlin where an asbestosis level of 0-1 was assumed. In 1952^ a medical report referred to an occupational disease diagnosed as asbestosis of the lungs on the basis of x-ray findings and the presence of asbestos bodies in the sputum. In 1947, K. was hospitalized for serous inflammation of the pleura. In Spring of 1950, during routine check-ups of factory employees, locally scattered tubercular calcifications in both lungs were found and on the left, the pleural cortex was seen with osseous infiltration and crystal line formation, active tuberculosis was not present. Beginning May 1951 the patient complained of increasing back-pain as the blood pressure in creased from 2 to 47/80 mm W. Repeated x-ray examinations of the lumbovertebral region showed only spondylotic changes but no evidence of caries.
