Welch, Vice President Internal Correspondence UAU February 8, 1982 c.i Rural Water Magazine - Article on A/C Water Pipe ACTION REQUIRED: Review for information , Background In early 1981, Staff learned that Rural Water magazine would publish in February 1982 a major article on "The Asbestos Cement Pipe Controversy." The magazine is published by the National Rural Water Association (Duncan, Oklahoma). In July 1981, Lewis & Gilman provided a press kit and related scientific information to the magazine's editor and Executive Director, Rob Johnson. Current Status On February 5, 1982, Staff spoke with Johnson to determine status of the article. Johnson advised that the magazine was converting to a quarterly and the article would not appear until June, 1982. When asked whether the press kit and related materials were helpful Johnson acknowledged that they were so. When asked about the tone of the article, Johnson stated there were numerous rural water supply systems with A/C pipe in them and his intent was to say "if you have it, don't worry about it." Johnson has not spoken with any representatives from EPA and confessed to having some administrative and philosophical problems with them. Based on his input, an adverse article is not anticipated.
