Although the c a s u a ltie s have Occurred under th e p ressu re of wartime c o n d itio n s , th e r e i s no doubt t h a t th e p r e c a u tio n s l a i d down i n th e b o o k le t a re n e c e s s a ry b o th now and tinder more norm al c irc u m s ta n c e s , p a r t i c u l a r l y a s th e u se of leaded g a so lin e s has become more g e n e ra l.

As re g a rd s n e c e ssa ry a lte r a tio n s to b u ild in g s and equipm ent, th e se should be put in hand as soon as p o s sib le . The b o o k let s ta te s th a t m echanical v e n tila tio n should be o f th e su c tio n type designed to remove vapours a t t h e i r p o in t o f o r i g i n and, f o r y o u r in fo rm a tio n , we e n c lo s e h e re w ith two p r i n t s o f our Drawing No. 88011 which show d e t a i l s o f vapour e x tr a c ti o n d u c tin g a s f i t t e d to a f i l l i n g machine in t h i s co u n try . T h is arrangem ent has proved most e ffe c tiv e in reducing th e g a so lin e vapour and le a d co n ten t in th e f i l l i n g machine atm osphere.
Two m ain d u c ts a re f i t t e d to th e m achine, one a t a l e v e l o f ab o u t e ig h teen inches above th e f i l l i n g n o zzles and th e o th e r ju s t below th e bottom o f th e t i n s . An in v e rte d cup about 3" d i a . i s f i t t e d t o e ac h f i l l i n g n o z z le in such a p o s itio n th a t when f i l l i n g , th e bottom o f th e cup i s Ig " from th e t i n to p . The annular space between th e cup and th e nozzle i s connected by fle x ib le m etalic hose to th e upper duct. Light sheet m etal tubes are also c a rrie d from th e upper duct to th e s n iftin g valv es above each p a ir of f i l l i n g m easures. These c a rry away any d rip s or vapour le a k s from th e s n if tin g v a lv e s. The low er d u c t i s f i t t e d w ith open s l o t s a b o u t 4 n lo n g b y 2 Ww ide o p p o s ite each t i n and draws o ff any vapour th a t c o lle c ts around th e b ases of th e t i n s due to splashes and leak s.
An 18" d ia . e x h au st fa n hav in g a d isp lacem en t o f 1400 c u . f t . o f a i r per m inute, driven by a .15 h .p . flam e-proof motor i s f i t t e d in th e w all o f th e b u ild in g ju s t above ground le v e l and th e two d u c ts a re connected t o th e su ctio n sid e o f th e fa n . With t h i s s e t up i t has been .found th a t a vacuum of about w ater gauge is m aintained in th e d u cts. T estsvw ith th e explosim eter and le a d e stim a tio n s ta k e n in th e v i c i n i t y o f th e f i l l i n g n o zzle have shown th a t w ith in p r a c tic a l lim its th e whole o f th e vapour ex p elled from th e t i n s i s drawn away in to th e d u c t.
T h is same p r i n c i p l e w ith m inor m o d if ic a tio n s c a n be a p p lie d t o alm o st any make o f f i l l i n g m achine w h eth er o f t h e w eig h t o r volume ty p e .

I t has been found th a t one o f th e w orst hazards due to g aso lin e vapours i s caused by pushing uncapped tin s along a g ra v ity conveyor. Blobs o f s o ld e r on th e bottom o f th e tin s : bumping on th e r o l l e r s combined w ith th e f le x ib ili ty of th e sid es causes a fin e spray to be e je c te d from th e f il lin g h o le . C onsequently arrangem ents should be made t o cap th e t i n s a s soon as possible a fte r leaving the f illin g nozzles. I f i t is e sse n tia l fo r the t i n s t o be tra n s p o rte d away from th e f i l l i n g machine b e fo re th e caps a re pushed i n , th e conveyor sh o u ld be covered i n and co n n ec tio n s made t o th e e x tra c tio n d u ctin g to draw o ff th e vapour caused by sp lash in g .
I f you consider th a t i t is advisable to f ix up sim ila r arrangement
in any of th e f i l l i n g sheds in your area and are unable to o b tain su ita b le
fa n s f i t t e d w ith flam e p ro o f m o to rs we can su p p ly them from t h i s c o u n try on
re c e ip t of your cabled advice of th e siz e s of fan s req u ired and th e cu rren t
ch aracteristics.
