Townsend, Medical Director and Chief of the Industrial Hygiene Division of the 0. S. Public Health Service. The question involved in this situation and in the relationships that have obtained over a period of years between representatives of Ethyl Corporation and those of the Public Health Service, is a long story which I shall not go Into at this time. nowever,_I would like to discuss this whole matter with you at some appro priate time. The present letter is merely an expression to you as President of Ethyl Corporation, of the official consent of the U. S. Public Health Service to the use of 4.6 c.c. tetraethyl lead in aviation gasoline. Actually this concentration of lead has been employed In military fuels for some time, but the Surgeon General's office approved 4.5 c.c. for use in commercial gasolines. Thi3 situation resulted In some degree of confusion in the minds of people concerned, especially in the petroleum industry. The resolution of this difficulty is a good thing. If you have any further immediate question about the significance of this matter, I am sure that Graham Edgar can answer it for you. It would be wise if some of your associates were informed of this matter,, especially Mr. Julian Prey and Mr. E. 0.
