PITTSBURGH OFFICE 1991 July 3 RE; ASBESTOS SURVEY METHODOLOGY/SOFTWARE VENDOR Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet with RFM Consultancy, Inc. They are in the business of selling fiber survey methodology, training and software. Attached is some of their literature for your information. The things that I found to be particularly interesting about the approach that these former DuPont-ers were taking were; 1. They don't just survey asbestos; they sample and characterize all fibrous materials. 2. They advocate training individuals familiar with the facility to do the fiber sampling (e.g. retirees, on-site contractors, other qualified employees). 3. The training they feel is necessary includes the "three day" AHERA training followed by a two day class of their own that fills in the gaps between what is needed in the AHERA school program and industry. 4. They don't advocate using blueprints or CAD systems to show where ACM is located they feel that this is too expensive and they think that it is possible to adequately describe the locations using word descriptions: Area/Department Building Floor Assessment Location 3. They affix a permanent embossed tag to the location where the sample -was taken. The number on this tag corresponds with a record describing the lab analysis, amount of material and condition of the material, number of people occupying the area, etc. 4. They use one of three protocols to determine how many samples need to be taken of a homogeneous area depending on the type of material being sampled (AHERA protocol, British protocol. Other unnamed protocol). They are putting more emphasis on a statistically significant number of sampled than I plan to put into the Alcoa Engineering Standard that I am drafting. ALCOA ARD 017733
