TITLE: REMOVAL. REPLACEMENT & DISPOSAL OF ASBESTOS THERMAL INSULATION
SPECIAL SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS: -A- Unless entire building, section of building, or specific insulation is
marked "AF" (Asbestos-Free) or is soft pad, consider insulation to be asbestos. A Disposal of all asbestos containing material will be handled per this SSP as noted in Key Point #3 and #5 below.
Barricading & Protective Equipment: A Removal or replacement of asbestos insulation (including encapsulated
suit case) - Barricade: Use signs which read (see Attachment #1):
A "CAUTION ASBESTOS DUST HAZARD". A "AVOID BREATHING DUST". A "DO NOT REMAIN IN AREA UNLESS YOUR JOB REQUIRES IT". A "BREATHING ASBESTOS DUST MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH". Protective Eg u i pmenjt: A "Tyvek" coveralls with surgical cap. A Rubber shoes or boots. A Leather or rubber gloves. A MSA Cornfo II with asbestos type H cartridges. A Other manufacturers' half mask respirator with high efficiency
cartridges or 3M air helmet. A Fill out permit and post at job. Send completed permit to SHEA
coordinator (Attachment #3). Permits are required for all jobs involving asbestos.
PRACTICE AND KEY POINTS
1. Notify area represen tative of asbestos removal job, fill out and post permit ( A11 achrnen t 3 ) .
2. Barricade the area and., post asbestos warning signs (Attachment 1)

3. Shut down HVAC and seal openings, if applicable. Turn off air moving
fans. Cover open gratings with 6 mil polyethylene, if applicable. Cover
floor area with polyethylene drop cloth and or cloth canvas and hang
polyethylene from walls if applicable.

4. Putting on personal protective equipment. A The new disposable coveralls are put on. A If separate disposable foot coverings are used, these are put on. A If rubber boots are used, these are put on. A New high efficiency filter cartridges are attached to the respirator. The 1/2 mask respirator with the high efficiency cartridges is inspected, put on, and then fit checked. A The head hood covering is put on over the respirator head straps. A Cotton, rubber or leather gloves are put on. A Other protective equipment such as safety glasses, hard hat, are put on.
5. Taking off the protective clothing. Whenever an employee leaves the barricaded work area for any reason, they must go through the decontamination sequence. The sequence shall include the following: A If a high efficiency Nilfisk vacuum cleaner is used, then all the personal protective equipment shall be vacuumed off prior to exiting the barricade. A' All protective coverings; coveralls with attached hood, separate hood if used, gloves are taken off and placed in double plastic bags and sealed. The plastic bags are labeled (Attachment 2) as asbestos containing waste. A- The person shall clean reusable protective equipment such as boots/shoes, safety glasses, hard hats with the Nilfisk vacuum cleaner or with a damp rag. The rag is considered asbestos-containing waste and the rag shall be placed in the plastic bag. A The person shall remove his respirator last and discard the high efficiency cartridges at completion of task or at the end of shift into the plastic bag because the cartridges are contaminated. A The respirator is then vacuumed off and/or wiped with a damp rag. The rag is considered asbestos-containing waste and the rag shall be placed in the plastic bag. A The double plastic bag containing asbestos-waste shall be labeled and sealed (Attachment 2).
6. Plastic glove bags can be used to contain insulation on vertical and horizontal sections of pipe.
7. Spray asbestos insulation with water and surfactant using a spray bottle or other approved applicator(s) before and during removal activity. A Do not apply water to chemically soaked insulation or insulation fabricated and protected to withstand repeated removal and reinsulation. Also use extreme caution around electrically traced piping. A Supervisor if wet method cannot be performed.

8. Remove wet insulation as unit sections and immediately place in a polyethylene bag (double bag). Seal bags with tape arid label with "CAUTION ASBESTOS" label (Attachment 2). Labeled bags are also available. k Repeated wetting down of insulation may be necessary to avoid creating dust. k If suit case type insulation is being reused, insulation can be stored in buggies, sealed in a polyethylene bag and labeled "CAUTION ASBESTOS." Nhen reinstalling, use care to avoid dust.
3. Clean up area by using an asbestos approved vacuum cleaner or the use of
sweeping compound (no dry sweeping). k Place vacuum contents and sweepings into polyethylene bag. Seal bag
with tape and label with "CAUTION ASBESTOS" label (see attached). Netting down contents may be necessary to avoid creating dust. k Use vacuum cleaner marked "ASBESTOS DUST ONLY".
10. Removed asbestos materials shall not be allowed to lie about the work area but shall be immediately sealed in bags.
11. No asbestos residue must remain on pipes, flanges, etc. Ends of exposed asbestos insulation must be properly sealed.
12. Dispose of asbestos material in special dumpster marked with asbestos hazards.
13. Care for protective equipment and storage. k All personal protective equipment including shoes must be vacuumed prior to exiting barricade. Use vacuum cleaner marked "ASBESTOS USE ONLY" * Respirator and cartridges will be vacuumed off and placed in bag, sealed and properly labeled for reuse after lunch. Cartridges shall be discarded into plastic bags at completion of task or at end of shift. Disposable articles (coveralls, cap) will be disposed of whenever employee exits a barricaded area. Shoes, gloves and respirator other than disposable will be vacuumed. k Shower required at completion of shift.
14. Remove warning signs and barricade.
15. Send completed permit to SHEA Coordinator (Attachment 3).

Tools used on transi te (use Nilfisk Uacuurn Cleaner with a HEF'A filter). All hand-operated and power-operated tools (saws, drills) shall be provided with a dust collection system. The worker shall wear a 1/2 mask respirator with high efficiency cartridge while performing this work.
