Benignus/J, Bryant P3LKI R. Munch JFQ The issues on Aroclor toxicity testing are complicated. I know you plan to issue written orogram objectives. My understanding after last meeting 12/6/68 is as follows: 2, Determine whether Jensen and Co, really have Aroclor or not in tissue of birds: (a.) by putting Aroclor through rats and chickens and seeing if we get the same or different peaks than found In Jensen paper. (Use mass spectrograph for check.) (b) by getting hold of tissues from nature which others say is Aroclor but which could be many other compounds. Use mass spectrograph to check vs. known Aroclor results. 2. Determine a tolerance level for Aroclor in feeding studies. Run a material balance on Aroclor to find out where it ends up. '. 5. Determine whether Aroclor is an enzyme inducer which affects steroids and Ca metabolism. (1 really don't know what I am saying here but you can clarify.) ' Keep track of what Govt, research labs are doing in way of testing, plus interpret their results for Monsanto. 5. Keep track of what Govt, research labs are finding in the way of geographical.location of so-called PCB peak3, and in what species of animals. What does this mean in the way of product control by Monsanto. Check with Johnson of Callandras Lab oratories. 6. Contact Eaeyer in Germany to see if they have taken . any action. Celandra Industrial Dio-Test Laboratories, IQc. 1810 Frontage Road Northbrook, Illinois 60062 Dear Joei This letter authorizes the initiation of two of the proposed Aroolor studies as followst Project No. BTL - Aroolor I-Fowl - Gross Toxicity la - Aroclor 1242 lb - Aroclor 1254 Ic - Aroclor 1260 Id - Aroclor 5460 le - Toxaphene If - DDT Ig - Chlorinated naphthalene The protocol for these studies is to be consistent with our discussions when you were In St. Louis and I would appreciate receiving a note from you outlining what you plan to do with an approximate cost. That letter indicates a cost of $2,700 for three of the Aroclora, Toxaphene and controls. Further it Indicates that additional materials could be included for $600 per material. Since we are adding additional Aroclor, DDT and chlorinated naphthalene I assume that the rat tissue study will cost approximately $4,500, V<e arc obtaining samples of several chlorinated naphthalenes and will provide you the material to be Investigated. Do you have a readily available source of DDT or shall I get this for you through our Agricultural Chemical Group? I have enclosed a copy of my summary of our meeting when you were down here (as you and I discussed it). There Is also a copy of Dill Richard's version, I hope you hove licked the flu bug and will have a happy holiday. Sincerely, . Elmer F, Wheeler Manager, Environmental Health EPVficJa Enclosure cct W.
