DIOXIN BLCOD LEVEIS FOUND AT ORTIiOCIILOROPHENOL SPILL SITE IN STURGEON. MO.
Dioxin blood lev els of 31 p .p .t . , and 7 p . p . t . , have been found in sam ples taken from workers exposed to orthochlorcphenol at a sp ill site in Sturgeon. Mo. (See
Feb. 14. Page 22).
This is tile first time blood le v e ls of d ioxin s have been found, the Environmental Protection Agency stated la st week.
The agency sa id a mixture o f dioxins were found and that the sp e c ific dioxins in it had not yet been identified. EFA noted that it would attempt to identify the d io xin s and to determine the rate a t which they were removed from the body.
In the April 13 public statem ent. EPA observed that preliminary resu lts cf ch ecks on workers exposed after the sp ill included: M easurable but toxicologically in sig n ifi cant le v e ls of orthoc hiorGphenol were feund in the urine of seven of twelve w orkers; phenol, another sp ill m aterial, w as not found in any sam p le s; and the blood sam p le s in which dioxins were found were taken from three workers "who reported skin burns or retries resulting from the sp illed m a te ria l."
The rtaTement noted. "Certain dioxins are known to be a sso c ia te d with se v e ral chr*. -ic health effects including can cer. Therefore, any level of exposure to th ese chem icals carries some health risk . However, based upon knowledge of dioxin content of the sp ill m aterial and com parisons wi th urine v alu es o f o-chlorophenol, it is apparent that these very low lev els leave little reason to bo concerned about any seriou s health effects to the Sturgeon, M issou ri community" (Sec April 11, Pages 7, 11, 21, 23, 25, and 26).
The agency added that checks to confirm the preliminary measurements were to
bo reedy about May 15.
