Hr. J.A. Brown, Jr., moved that reading be omitted; seconded by Mr. N.L.A. Hartucci. So voted. 3. The Financial Report was presented by Treasurer Martucci. Mr. E.A. Schuman moved that report be accepted; Mr. J.A. Brown, Jr., seconded the motion, and it was so voted. The Report is attached to these minutes. J BB 0021051^ 5* The Fibre Producers Report was given by Mr. M.P. jCarson, Vice President -- Sales. Asbestos Corporation Limited. Ke mentioned that low economic conditions in several countries had adversely affected total shipments of Canadian asbestos fibres in the first eight months of this year - down 8.8% - however, total sales of spinning fibres were up about 1% in that period* Group 4 fibres for use in asbestos-cement products were off, as were spinning fibre sales in Italy, France and Germany. Japan has made a good recovery. The mbargoon Rhodesian fibre continues. However, some Rhodesian is reaching markets thru a third country. 6. President Rainey introduced Dr. Clinton II. Whitehurst, Jr., Head- Bept. of Industrial Managemnit, Clera son University, Clemson, S.C.. who gave a most interesting talk entitled: '^Operations .Research Technique We were privileged indeed to have the opportunity to h*ar Dr. Whitehurst, a well-known authority in the field of 3543 Minut s - General Meeting - continu ,l Page -3 Industrial Management. An abstract of his talk follows: ABSTRACT "It is profoundly erroneous truism, repeated by all copy books and `by eminent people when they are making speeches, that we should cul tivate the habit of thinking of what we are doings The precise opposite is the case. Civilization advances by extending the number of important opera tions which we can perform without thinking about them." The above quotation by Alfred North Whitehead was both an introduc tion and, in fact, a summary of the address '`Operations Research Techniques" delivered by Dr. C.H. Whitehurst of Clemson University before the Asbestos Textile Institute at Hilton Head, South Carolina on October 6, 1967. In specific terms the address covered in capsule form ten OR tech niques that could be utilized in a typical industrial organization. Bach technique was illustrated by a simple example designed to show its Potential as an aid to management decision making. Included were examples making use of linear programming, Markov processes, econometrics, multiple graphic correlation analysis, input-output models, matrix algebra, industrial dynamics, and a Fonte Carlo simu lation model. In each case the relevance of the technique to com puter programming was emphasized. The large number of techniques discussed was made possible by dis tributing handouts to the audience which contained the specific ex ample, relevant technique, and at least one library reference. The handouts together with explanatory illustrations on an easel board was successful in imparting the potential for OR analysis in a firmfs operations. 7. Jack Christian, President of Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd., wrote the Secretary prior to this meeting that neither he nor Tom Tiggert. would be able to attend due to the fact that their new Clinton mine, at Clinton Creek, B.C., was due to start production and they would be busy there. President Rainey asked Mr. Wm.J.W. Smith, Bell Asbestos i ines Limited, sales representatives for Cassiar, to tell us something about the new mine. _ Mr. Smith said the Clinton.Mine is 600 to 700 miles north of the pre sent Cassiar mine, close to the border of Alaska. Problem of trans porting fibre is somewhat similar to shipments from Cassiar. The type of fibre from the Clinton Fine is generally similar to Cassiar fibre, but there could be some considerable differences. There are both long and short fibres - but Clinton will produce primarily #4 Group fibres, and a secondary grade will be Group 5. Because yield from ore is never precisely known in advance, Mr. Smith stated that perhaps grades may be produced, other than those presently antici- I bb 0021052 | 3544 Minutes - General Meetins - continued: Page `-4-- 8. All four of the committee chairmen have now completed the normal two years service, and President Rainey expressed sincere appreci ation on behalf of the Board of Governors and Members of the Institute for the faithful and efficient performance of their duties. A review of the minutes for the past two years gives abundant proof of the great amount of work done by each committee under their capable leadership. 10. Mr. J.A. President Rainey informed the members that the application of HTIAPOS Y TETIDOS DE ASBESTO,S.A., Toluca, Mexico, for Associate Membership in A.T.I, had been approved by the Board of Governors. This fine company is a leading manufacturer of asbestos textil s as well as other asbestos products, in Mexico. Wo are very pleased to welcome them as a new member of the Institute. 14. The next General Meeting of the Institute will be held at the Hotel Roosevelt, New York City, on February 8th and 9th, 1968. Registration is on February 7th.
