Hourly Safety Committee Recommendations A. The company truck bed repairs Involving the use of checkerplates has been finished. This item is, therefore, closed. B. The scaffold boards which are painted with grit are being issued for Jobs requiring such a special board. In the future, a finer grit will be used on these boards. Since no minor injuries have been reported as a result of the use of these boards, nor have complaints been registered directly with supervision, it is felt that this hazard was over emphasized. C. The program for inspection of tool boxes has begun and the first complete inspection should be finished by November 1. 2. Local Eye Bath Standard Mr. Browning presented a copy of the engineering drawings covering this standard. It is ready for printing and distri bution. Holders of the Engineering Standards Book will re ceive copies. 3. Accident Prevention Guide The guide has been reviewed in meetings with the superintendents, and is now ready for set-up for the printers. Accident Statistics It was reported that the new minor Injury and accident form was discussed with the affected supervision on September 9 and placed In service on September 10. This new form will provide the statistical basis for future accident prevention work. 5. Supervisors Safety Meeting Mr. Winkle reported that his committee was going to present the centralized safety meeting for October during the National Fire Prevention Week (October 4 through 10). The program will consist of a skit baBed on past fire and spill Investigation reports and a film showing the Signal Hill (California) fire. In addition to this program, the above film will be shown to all hourly personnel during that week. 6. Supervisory Attendance to Outside Safety Meetings The superintendents were asked to submit their nominations of supervisors to attend the National Safety Congress. The nomina tions are to be submitted to the Safety Director by September 21. The National Safety Congress will be held In Chicago on October 19 through 23. 7. Chief Operators and Leadmen Safety Training A plan for the safety training of chief operators and leadmen was presented. It provides for a Problem Solving session to be held with supervision to determine methods most applicable and practical for that group of supervisors to present safety training to their chief operators and leadmen. It was suggested that a pilot group be tried to determine the potential success of this training program. Mr. Rotzler and Mr. Wood volunteered for such a pilot group In operations and maintenance respectively. NEW BUSINESS 1. Hourly Safety Committee The Hourly Safety Committee recommended that the plant lighting be studied. They specifically asked for such a study of the street lighting In the west plant. This was referred to Mr. Wood and suggested that a lighting survey of the entire plant be made and recommendations submitted on a reasonable and practical pedestrian lighting solution. Hourly Safety Committee Publicity Publicity of this committee has been given through notices on the bulletin board in recent weeks. The Committee has asked that a contest be approved by the Board; such a contest would involve the calling of Individual employees, asking for suggestions on the improvement of plant safety and rewarding the employee for his suggestions. This request was denied because it was felt that such a contest is counter to our present philosophy, that safety is part of our Job. There was some feeling that the committee members, themselves, should make a stronger effort to get out among the men in the field and sell themselves. Also, that publicity methods now being used be reviewed to be sure that objectives of this committee are clearly Btated. 3. Superintendents Safety Meetings Due to the fact that there will be a centralized safety meeting in October, superintendents were asked to hold their meetings with their salaried employees in November, and thereafter hold their meetings on the odd months. 4. Plans for Three Million Safe Manhour Mark Several ideas were submitted during this meeting on how to publicize the three million safe manhour mark which we can reach on or about November 12. These ideas will be studied. 5. Rotating Supervisor The rotating supervisor for the fourth quarter for 1959 will be Mr. John DeMeritt.
