Inc. - Cost Reduction This solvent was previously mentioned in the February, 1960 Product Development Report as a new tool for lowering costs. We now report that we are averaging 5,000 gallons per month with fine savings and no produc tion or customer problems. Our two best selling lacquer reducers, 135-C-206 and 135-C-207 contain a relatively high?percentage of this solvent and sales are increasing. We have successfully used this solvent in Government Speci fications and recently saved over $1,000 on one order for RL-154111 (#601 White MIL-L-6805-B Aircraft Lacquer). Many other similar formulas have been reduced in cost about 8-10^/gallon with no sacrifice in quality. Pencil Coatings - Eagle Pencil Company This customer was last reported on in April, 1960 and we want to report we now have approved and sold a revised Clear Gloss Lacquer, RL-16377-A. This clear is mixed with the pigmented Gasket Lacquer and is used to increase the gloss of the final coat. Ten drums.have been shipped for the first order. We also have approved on the Yellow Gasket Lacquer RL-13943 but have received no orders. We just received a new Lab Request to formulate a Lead-Free Yellow Gasket Lacquer which is partly completed and looks okay. We think this should have been done years ago and suggested it to customer during last visit. A. I. RAPP GLD006586 R-2409 PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER. 1960 Specifications and Special Assignments Grout) We have been manufacturing in considerable quantity RGL-28831-A, Hot Spray direct-to-metal hi-build freight car red in which the pigmentation is red iron oxide and lead chromate. It was brought to the attention of the Lab that the factory has had to tint with more red. This presented a formulat ing problem because we did not want to eliminate the lead chromate in this one-coat direct-to-metal finish for rust inhibitive reasons. The problem was solved by using Reichhold Chemicals #1299 Medium Chrome Yellow in place of YW-2. This new Reichhold Chemicals pigment is quite low in tinting strength which allowed the shade of the paint to be more red. We have compared W-170 (Tipure R-610) versus W-244 (Tipure R-900) in an alkyd-urea baking enamel for weatherometer exposure. Neither showed any signs of chalking after 600 hours. W-244 gives a slightly higher initial gloss than W-170 and even though they both naturally were lower in gloss after exposure, W-244 still retains this slight edge in gloss over W-170.
