Subject: Industrial Hygiene Survey
On December 6, 1984, I conducted an industrial hygiene survey at the Minneapolis plant. The results of the survey are attached, and a discussion of the results is contained below.
Air Sampling - Fiber
The results of the personnel fiber sampling are well below the OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) for asbestos of 2.0 fibers/cc of air for an 8-hour Time-Weighted Average (TWA).

The results of the engineering samples show the waste rock collector as a potential problem area. Sample MN-21, from the waste rock hopper, showed a fiber level of 1.65 fiber/cc. Currently, the waste rock is collected in a shallow wheelbarrow which is ventilated by means of a canopy hood with three canvas siding flaps. I recommend that you contact CPD Engineering to request a better method of airborne fiber control for the waste rock col lector.
Noise Monitoring
The results of the employee noise dosimetry are indicated below and on the attached sheets.

The noise monitoring was done using both 80 dBA and 90 dBA threshold levels. An overexposure (85 dBA or greater) with the 80 dBA threshold signals the need for a Hearing Conservation Program to be in effect. An overexposure (90 dBA or greater) with the 90 dBA threshold requires mandatory hearing protection in accordance with 0SHA regulations.
The results of the noise dosimetry done in Minneapolis reveal that employee noise exposures are below the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 90 dBA as well as being below the "Action Level" of 85 dBA for an 8-hour TWA.
Safety Survey
At this time I have no recommendations.
