Machle, Dear Dr. Machle: As of this date, I have shipped to you samples numbered as follows: CHI-139-BGC CHI-239-BGC Sample 139 is sludge from the Texas Company tank #2178 at Lockport, Illinois. Sludge in this tank averaged from 12 to 18 inches in depth after the tank had been continuously charged with water and drawn off with a pump for two days. The suction spider is about 18 Inches off the bottom of the tank, and with the depth of sludge found, it would seem entirely possible to draw; off sludge along with gasoline during tank car or barge loading operations. Sample 239 is scale from the side walls. The moisture is from frost that was scraped off with the scale. The side walls were quite free of scale, making it impossible to secure a sample of adequate quantity. Very truly yours. B. G. Crane C:J Safety Engineer
