Moore From Tom Grumbles Date August 18, 1980 Subject CRESOLS MSDS (conoco) The industry task force testing results on cresol mixtures have been discussed with Jim Hall, Bill Broddle and Or. Massad. A decision has been made not to include information on potential mutagenicity of ortho-cresol or mixtures containing o-cresol. This decision was reached for the following reasons: 1. The test results are preliminary at this time. Al though initial results show a positive response in some segments of the test battery, the results have not been fully evaluated. 2. As you are aware the test material was a mixture of cresol isomers, not implicating any single compound. 3. Although short term cytogenic tests are generally considered valid indicators of human response, no human data or other animal data exists to indicate genotoxic activity of cresols. If in the future we gain information which firmly indicates a muta genic hazard with o-cresol the MSDS's can easily be revised and distributed. Based on the information we currently have, I do not feel that we are being remiss in not including reference to the possible mutagenicity of o-cresol in our MSDS's at this time. i v-'----------------- Thomas G.
