2/8/87 RE: Latest Draftings on Midland RA TO: Ad Hoc-ers FROM: Don Barnes -_ Last week, at the request of the Committee, I distributed copies of the Nov., 1986 draft of the Risk Assessment which is being prepared for Region 5 in relation to the ''dioxin" situation in Midland, MI. I also included comments which had been received from the Region on the draft and a set of responses to those comments. ^. After 2 (3?) extended telephone conversations with the Region, I have prepared another draft of the portion of the RA dealing with exposure to CDDs/CDFs via fish and associated estimates of risk for cancer and reproductive effcts. These are being forwarded to the Region on Monday. I have also prepared an item-by-item response to the Region 5 comments in regard to the fish section of the RA. All of this material is attached. The appropriate HQ participation in/review of th RA is not clear to me at this point. On each of the first two drafts, the Chlorinated Dioxins Work Group met to.discuss the document, with the Region either present or. tied-in by telephone. I have * informed the Region of the endeavors of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Risk Characterization and have indicated that our outcome here may have impact their outgo there. However, given their understandable interest in completing their project, I have suggested that their effort continue apace, unless and until they receive some other signal from those leading the Risk Characterization effort.
