Pierrard, C. G. Pfeifer, and R. D. Snee Blood lead data from the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II) have been analyzed. NHANES II was a cross-sectional study designed for measure ment of health status with special emphasis on nutrition. Venous blood lead was determined for approximately one-half of the twenty thousand residents examined between 1976 and 1980 in 64 locales of the contiguous U.S.A. and Hawaii. Effects of oversampling the low income, preschool and elderly segments of the population were studied. Variation in demographic composition in the 64 locales over the four year course of the survey also were analyzed for their influence on interpretation of blood lead results. An analysis of quality control data to develop adjustments for analytical variability also was conducted. Carboxyhemoglobin and other biochemical measurements made in NHANES II also were studied to supplement the analysis of blood lead data.
