1. This standard has been approved by the Department of Defense and is mandatory for use by the Departments of the Army, the Navy, and the A ir Force effective 10 April 1957.
2. In accordance with established procedure the Standardization Division has designated the Quartermaster Corps, Bureau of Supplies and Accounts, and the Air Force, respectively, as Army-Navy-Air Force custodians of this standard.

1. INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
1.1 Purpose. The purpose of this standard is to provide uniform marking of military supplies and equipment for shipment and storage.
1.2 Deviations. When deviations from this standard are found to be necessary, specific instructions shall be obtained from the cog nizant activity.

1.3.1 Abbreviation of corporate name contractor. Where corporate name of con
tractor will require two or more lines, an abbreviation of the name which can be readily identified with the contractor will be permitted.
1.4 Unauthorized markings. No markings shall be placed on any containers other than those specified in this standard or authorized by the cognizant activity concerned, or those required by regulation or statute.
1.4.1 Advertising m atter and case mark ing. Unless otherwise specified herein or in the contract or order, advertising matter and case markings not interfering with the clar ity of required markings on containers will be permitted, provided th at no payment of royalties directly or indirectly by the Gov ernment is involved by the inclusion of such matter.
1.5 DOMESTIC ADDRESS (APPLICATION OF)
1.5.1 Full carloads and full truckloads. Domestic address will not be required on shipping containers, palletized unit loads, unpacked items and bulk items (such as cement, lumber, etc.) and for empty kegs or drums (new or used) shipped in full car loads or full truckloads moving from a single consignor to a single consignee.
1.5.2 Less than carload (LC L) and less than truckload (L T L ) . The domestic address will be required on all shipping containers, palletized unit loads, and unpacked items for less than carload and less than truckload lots.
1.6 Overseas address (application of). Un less otherwise specified by the cognizant ac tivity, overseas address will be required on of all shipping containers, palletized unit loads, and unpacked items.

2. DEFINITIONS AND MARKING TERMS
2.1 DEFINITIONS
2.1.1 Interior packages.
2.1.1.1 Unit package. The first tie, wrap, or container applied to a single item or a multiple thereof, or a group of items of a single stock number preserved or unpre served which involves a complete or identi fied package.
2.1.1.2 Intermediate package. An interior container which contains two or more unit packages of identical items.
2.1.2 Unpackaged items. Items not pack aged that are to be placed in a shipping container.
2.1.3 Loose or unpacked items. Items which do not require a shipping container.
2.1.4 Shipping container. Any exterior container which may be used for shipment.
2.1.4.1 Bale. In conformance with Speci fication MIL-B-3149, Baling of Clothing and Equipage.
2.1.4.2 Noncompressed hale. Same as bale except that no compression is applied.
2.1.4.3 Cloth covered bundle. An item (such as most tents) pattern folded and packed by covering with jute, burlap, or cot ton osnaburg cloth.
2.1.5 Palletized unit load. For the purpose of this standard, a palletized unit load shall consist of a container or a number of con tainers placed on a pallet, or skid platforms or runners, and secured thereto for the pur pose of shipping as a unit.
2.1.6 Cognizant activity.
2.1.6.1 For marking at contractors facil ities. Head of the bureau or service for which the supplies are procured.
2.1.6.2 For marking at installations. Head
of the bureau or service having responsi bility for storage and shipment.
2.1.7 Methods of preservation and pack aging. Methods established by Military Spec ification MIL-P-116, Preservation, Method of.
2.1.8 Levels of preservation, packaging, and packing. Levels established by appro priate departmental instructions for Preser vation, Packaging and Packing Levels.
2.2 Marking terms. Unless otherwise speci fied herein, when the following marking terms are specified, the words "Stock No." , "Nomenclature", etc., shall not be shown in the marking but the information indicated shall be completed as follows :
2.2.1 Stock number. The stock number shall be the exact stock number specified in the contract or order or as specified by the cog nizant activity concerned. The Federal Stock Number shall be used when provided. When no FSN has been issued, the space imme diately above the stock number used shall be left blank for subsequent placement of FSN. The stock number shall not be altered by any addition or deletion.
2.2.2 Nomenclature. Nomenclature shall be the exact nomenclature of the item specified in the contract or order or as specified by the cognizant activity concerned.
Note. Nomenclature shall consist of the item name approved and published by the Office of Cataloging, OASD, and such additional modifiers or portions of the approved item description as may be required by the cognizant activity. Abbreviated nomenclature as authorized by the cognizant activity concerned will be permitted.
2.2.2.1 Assorted items. When an assort ment of items which cannot be identified under one stock number is packed in a ship ping container, a brief description of the contents will be permitted in lieu of nomen clature, for example: "Repair parts for pump, centrifugal, 2-inch disc, gas eng-

Jaejer 2APS-1, 55 GPM, Ser 12345", or for unrelated items, "assorted items--see pack ing list."
2.2.3 Specification number. The specifica tion number shall be that shown by the con tract or order and shall include the revision designation and amendment, for example "M IL-P-6064A (2)'\ In addition, as appli cable, type, grade, style, class, size, etc., shall be shown.
2.2.4 Quantity. Quantity shall be the num ber of units contained in each unit package, and the number of units of issue in each intermediate package, shipping container, bundle or secured lift. When specified by the cognizant activity concerned, the abbrevia tion "QTY" shall be used.
2.2.5 Unit of issue. Unit of issue shall be as specified in the contract or order. Fol lowing are examples of units of issue: piece, pair, bottle, can, each, dozen, gross, pound, gallon, yard etc. Unit of issue shall be used in conjunction with, and on the same line as number of designated units of issue. When specified by the cognizant activity concerned, the abbreviation "UN" shall be used.
2.2.6 Gross weight. The weight shown on shipping containers, bundles and secured lifts, etc., shall be the gross weight indicated to the nearest pound. The abbreviation " WT" shall be used.
2.2.7 N et weight (air shipment) (Navy). The net weight shown on air shipment con tainers for the Navy shall be the weight of the contents, not including dunnage, cush ioning or the exterior container. The net weight shall be shown in pounds; fraction will be rounded to the next higher pound. The abbreviation "NET WT" shall be used. The net weight and gross weight shall both be shown on a ir shipments.
2.2.8 Cube. Cube shall be the cubic dis placement of the shipping container bundle

2.2.9 Outside dimensions. Outside dimen sions shall be shown on all shipping con tainers, bundles or secured lifts, having a cube of 30 cubic feet or over or having any single dimension of 72 inches or over. Out side dimensions shall be shown in the order of length, width and height and shall appear in addition to the cube. Dimensions shall be shown in feet and inches to the nearest inch.
2.2.10 Protection and date markings. Un less otherwise specified, the markings re quired by 2.2.10.1, 2.2.10.1.1 and 2.2.10.1.2 shall be applied as applicable to all interior packages, shipping containers and palletized unit loads protected at level A or B (see 2.1.8). In addition, the markings required by 2.2.10.2 through 2.2.10.4.2.2 shall be ap plied under the conditions specified therein.
2.2.10.1 Levels of preservation and pack aging, packing, method of preservation and month and year preserved.
2.2.10.1.1 Interior packages. Level and method of preservation specified in 5.1.1 shall indicate the level of preservation and packaging applied to the item (level A or B), the method of preservation (method I, IA etc, of Military Specification MIL-P-116, Preservation, Methods of) and month and

year preserved, and shall be marked in ac cordance with the following example: "A 1A-11/56".
2.2.10.1.2 Shipping Containers and Pal letized Loads (Identical Item s). The level of preservation and packaging of the contents, the level of packing, the method of preserva tion and the earliest interior package date, as specified in 6.1.1, shall be applied in ac cordance with the following example: A /A 1A-11/56. Where a shipping container or palletized load contains items with different level of preservation, packaging, packing or methods of preservation, markings for all items will be shown on the shipping con tainer. Example: A/A-1A-11/56, A/B-1C11/56.
2.2.10.1.3 Shipping containers and pal letized loads (Unlike Item s). Shipping con tainers and palletized loads with unlike items will not have the level of preservation and packaging of the contents, the level of packing, the method of preservation or the package date indicated thereon.
2.2.10.2 Date manufactured. For all items or assemblies required by applicable specifi cations, bulletins, drawings, or other doc uments to be marked with date of manu facture, the date of manufacture as required in the applicable document shall be used and shown on packages and containers. When two or more interior packages bear different dates of manufacture, only the earliest date shall be shown on the shipping container. When the contents of a shipping container includes two or more unlike items, no date will be required on the shipping container.
2.2.10.3 Date cured. For all rubber (or synthetic elastomers) items required by ap plicable specifications, bulletins, drawings, or other documents to be marked with cure date, the cure date as required in the appli cable document shall be used and shown on packages and containers. When two or more interior packages bear different cure dates, only the earliest shall be shown on the ship ping container. When the contents of a shipping container includes two or more
unlike items, no date will be required on the shipping container.
2.2.10.4 Expiration date. The expiration date used shall be that date which has been established by the manufacturers or specified by an authorized activity. When two or more interior packages bear different expiration dates, only the earliest shall be shown on the shipping containers.
2.2.10.4.1 Sensitized Materials. For sensi tized materials and for other items, specified in the contract or order, except drugs and biologicals, the expiration date shall be used and shown by month and year on packages and shipping containers, and shall be in dicated as shown by the following example: "EXPIRES 4/54."
2.2.10.4.2 Drugs and biologicals. For drugs and biologicals (potency dated materials), both the date of manufacture and expiration date shall be used and shown by month and year on packages and containers, and shall be indicated as shown by the following example: "MFD 4/52 EXPIRES 4/54."
2.2.10.4.2.1 Perishable biologicals requir ing refrigerants. For perishable biologicals requiring refrigerants (such as whole blood or smallpox vaccine), each shipping contain er shall prominently display the following information:

2.2.13 Name and address of contractor or manufacturer. The name and address of the contractor, or manufacturer when specified, shall be shown by name, city, and state only.
To be delivered and returned to refrigeration as soon as possible. May be unrefrigerated for period of actual transit to receiving ac tivity provided this can be accomplished within three or four days. If delayed enroute, return to refrigeration during delay.
"DO NOT FREEZE OR ALLOW TO BE SUBJECTED TO TEMPERATURES ABOVE 95F. AT ANY TIME."
2.2.10.4.3 Hazardous chemicals. All pack age units of hazardous chemicals to be ultimately issued to the consumer who may be exposed to such chemicals under condi tions of ordinary use shall have affixed there to such warning labels as may be required in accordance with the Manufacturing Che mists Association's Manual L -l, A Guide for Preparation of W arning Labels for Hazardous Chemicals or in accordance with appropriate Department of Defense in structions as published which shall take precedence.
2.2.11 Lot, batch, or control number. Shall be that series of numbers or letters establish ed by the manufacturer to record production and control of product.
2.2.12 Serial number. The serial number shall be th a t appearing on the item as as signed by the m anufacturer or the Govern ment for identification or control purposes, and when unit packaged shall be shown on each unit and intermediate package and shipping container, except when several items bearing consecutive serial numbers are packed in one container only the first and
2.2.14 Contract, purchase, order, or office identifying number. The contract, purchase order, or office identifying number shall be th a t appearing on the procurement docu ments covering the shipment. When the con tract and purchase order number are both shown, the purchase order number shall be used; and for the Medical Services, when the contract and office identifying numbers are both shown, the office identifying num bers shall be used.
2.2.15 Shipping package number.
2.2.15.1 Overseas shipment. Shipments identified with an overseas address shall be numbered as directed by the cognizant ac tivity.
2.2.15.2 Domestic shipment. Unless other wise specified by the cognizant activity, for domestic shipments of identical items, pack age numbers will not be required. For do mestic shipment of mixed items, containers shall be numbered consecutively, starting with number 1, and the number shall show in addition, the total number of containers, palletized unit loads or unpacked items com prising the shipment, for example, package No. 2 of a 28-package shipment shall be in dicated at "PKG2 of 28." The shipping pack age number for shipments within or between M ilitary departments shall be in accordance with Bureau or Service regulations or in structions.
2.2.16 Requisition, project, and consign ment number. The requisition, project, and
