The strategic plan was given a mission, purpose, and five major goals. AIHA set out to become more aggressive in formulating scientifically based positions; marketing those positions to appropriate audiences, and taking a leadership role to assure decision-m akers have appropriate details to serve society The first ( governmental affairs consultant (N eece, Cator & Associates) m Washington, D.C. was hired to advise and assist in addressing issues, and getting AIHA's technical / voice heard by the appropriate audiences With the j consultant's guidance, AIHA instigated visits to Capitol ` Hill, prompted meetings with key regulatory officials, and provided extensive commentary on pending legislation and regulation. Coalitions with other associations were sought to leverage AIHA's position in the regulatory and legislative arenas AIHA goals were to ensure that laws and regulations were developed on the basis of "good science" by delivering the experts (most often AIHA committee chairs) to agencies and congressional staff who develop the laws and regulations
