REQUESTED BY: WHAT IS WANTED: P. L. Marsh A dercription of the application end evaluation of Spraying Uool on the Job. WHY WANTED: To determine the possibilities of using these mixtures for sprayed acoustical treatments. REPORT: 1. Mix containing Amoaite fibers sprayed very veil onto a rib lath ceiling, no sections dropped off, nor did any blisters form. 2. Mix contrining asbestos fibers W-J did not sprey on satisfactorily, some sections dropped off. . 3. Mater usage for the Amcsite mix averaged 1/2 lb. per lb. of material. Oie mix containing f . - U Z fibers required an excess of 'rater. if. The sprayed material resulted in r. rovigh finished surface. 5. Asbestos floats improved the texture slightly, but contributed to tineas. ' . 6. Coverace at 5/8* thick rvera?d 2800 oq,. ft. per ton, this is equivalait to 2330 c . ft. per ton rt 3/'*" thick. 7. Jtrrlieation The materials containing Amosite fibers prayed on roaii!;;, no ect^no dronuing off, nor hlibtero forming. She spraying rate, at 5/o ttid. averted 2 1/2 lbs. ''er minute, 'iilch is comparable to the Limpet application rate. n V * ?ough Surface resulted. The replication of a fine finish coat, did help* anoothen the surface, hut not as smooth as Limpou. The water usage for the Amosite nix averaged 0.5 lbs. per lb. of material. This was considerably less than used for the sterch, wool nix previously applied. ' Type X wool nix aroeared to use slightly more water than did l2fe this was only*visual, since work could not he stopped to check ohe aCwuel water usage. The mass whan dried adhered very well to the metal lath. 707985 RPaecpeort HHoo.. 3913 The application of the nix twins the shorter asbestos fiberB hT-hZ, did not perform satisfactorily. -An excessive amount of water had to be used reeu? tins in a vet ness. The initial bond 'fas poor, end some sections drop-ed off the oeiling. Than dried, the material appeared to be as satisfactory an the sprayed Anosite nix. All of the epreyed wool m p.s covered ,rith r thin coat of Linnet. The Linpet adhered very veil to the wool, and temped to a smooth finish. The binder used was Perfection Prate Powder shipped from Chicago. Its bonding action though satisfactory, did not perform as 'fell as paste powder previously used from Dune! lea, K. J. The coverage for both types of material averaged 70 sq. ft. per 50 lb. bag r.t 5/8" thick, thin is equivalent to 2330 sr. ft. per ton at 3/**" thidc. Generally tlie wool application 'an dustier than the appl icr.tion of Limpet. This dustiness '-tus attributed to tho use of asbestos floats. The floats did improve the texture olig'-tly. Reconnendatlons 1. The floats should bo renovod from the formula, since the increase in dust, end the possibility of Asbecto3is out-veigft the elicit increase in surface smoothnenr. 2. Vith the possibility of purchasing the Anosite fibers nt a lover cost, the Anosite content of the fornulr should be increased 2 .a This would help compensate for the removal of the floats. 3 . The new formula should be T^rpe X nineral wool Ariosito fibers. . Per(Dfeucntei-olannP, a1s3t.eJP.)owder The new formula would be advantageous in manufacturing since wool i3 nomplly sadked hO lbs. to a bag, and no adjustments of veigtts would be required >iien making 100 lb. batches. J. 07946 Re : ' Film No. 27530 Taken on: 10/4/68 Dear Mr. Tolin: I am sorry to be late in answering your letter but I have been out of the country and am only now getting around to my correspondence. From the information that you have supplied to me I strongly suspect that has *mitral Stenosis and this accounts for the abnormal contour of his heart shadow. The fact that his heart shadow was gettin larger is difficult to evaluate other than by a direct history and physical and knowledge of his past in greater detail than you can ob tain. This, of course, can only be done by his personal Physician or a Consultant chosen by his personal Physician. I suspect that has more of a problem with his heart than he either knows about or is willing to talk about. In all probability the abnormalities in the basal portions of ,his lung are related to the heart disease but the possibility that he may have inflammation and changes in the pleura of the lung which might be related to asbestos exposure should be kept in mind. I don't believe that at this point it should be pointed out to him. It is my impression that you have done as much as management needs to do since you have called to his attention the fact that he has an ab normal film. From my own past experiences I would not advise making a stronger approach to either or his Physician. With best wishes, Sincerely yours, * -V / - ^ __ --- .' . J " \ George W. Wright,.
