Hammond Medical Division Humble Oil and Refining Company Box 2180 Houston, Texas Dear Jim: But for the fact that I have seen you since the receipt of your letter of March 5, and have had some exchange of correspondence with Hardy Kemp on the same subject, I should feel negligent, indeed, in not haying responded directly to your request for advice concerning the program of the Sixth Annual Industrial Health Conference in Houston. Knowing your good humored tolerance, I feel fairly secure in your good will, and I shall not bore you with explanations, but I do wish to say that I was in no position to give you positive help in either matter which you referred to me for advice. It seemed likely then that I should be in England or en route at the time of the Conference, and since I could neither be preeeat nor pass upon the material that might be presented on tetraethyl lead or (by any of our staff) on the carcinogenicity of petroleum fractions, I could not enter heartily into the suggestion that these matters be dealt with in the conference. (Horton's return to the U. S.A. and my departure, plus the intervening vacation period (August) will make it very difficult for us to fulfill more than our present responsibilities to the Medical Advisory Committee of A. P. I. Apaper prepared with an eye to publication would be a.difficult assignment.) - I have waited to give you definite information as to my ability to attend the Conference, and nowI must tell you that my departure abroad is set for the last week in September. Having seen your "Preliminary Program" issued byA. P. I., I knowthat you have proceeded with the preparation of the program and that Ihave not caused delay. ` I regret very much that I cannot attend this Conference. I have enjoyed it in previous years, and I have felt happy and very much at home with you and your associates in giving such help as I could. A half day will be devoted to health as pects of the petroleum industry. It occurs to me that you are in position to advise me about possibly two excellent papers. One of these could be on how the tetra-ethyl lead problem was recognized and studied, and the success of the control measures which have been adopted. This paper could be given by a repre sentative from Ethyl Corporation, Du Pont Company, or your or ganization. The other paper might be a presentation by Wesley Horton, or yourself, on the API research on carcinogenic oil fractions. To refresh your memory, the API Medical Advisory group meets in Houston two days preceding the Conference, which begins in Houston on October 1.
