DESCRIPTION OF CHANGE Eaton Corporation has.proposed to supply brake blocks.for all HEMTT axles that are 100% asbestos free in plage of the current brake blocks which have an asbestos composition. Along with change in the friction material the shoe will be coined to reduce the potential for torque variation from brake to brake. Eaton part number for shoe and lining parts will change. 6. NEED FOR CHANGE Because of OSHA regulations covering the handling of asbestos in the workplace, the manufacturers of the HEMTT brake blocks-Carlisle and Abex-will not produce asbestos base products beyond 1987. All HEMTT linings will be changed except M984A1 rear brake blocks which were changed previously (ref: COTPI 29-Eaton, Appendix 1). All shoes will be changed from original to coined. Brake blocks are compatable with either coined or original shoes. The coined and original brake shoes are physically interchangeable, but restrictions do apply. No vehicle retrofit will be required. 7. DRAWINGS INCLUDED 8. ILS IMPACT Additional part numbers will be added to represent the new assemblies, lining and shoes. Also, the manual must be updated to explain the restrictions of mixing shoe and/or linings. 9.
