Corps Enginesring laboratories at fort Komouth, N. J., annually sponsors a Battery Research and Development Conference, The purpcssi to acquaint the battery industry with the progress of Signal Corps research and development programs in the battery field and to encourage exchange of information. The Amod*. ion, as in the past, was in vited to send a delegate to the Conference. Subjects discussed at the neeting of possible interest to members of ths Lead Industries Association were naclear batteries, nickel-cedmltn batteries and mine-silver oxide batteries. Increasing interest in the nuclear T atomic battery field was evi denced by the number of papers devoted to the subject. The purpose of research in this unique field is to determine the practicality of utilising radioactivity as a source of electrical energy. One system investigated used strontiua 90 as a radiation source, another used tritium. Since the source of energy la beta radiation, shielding is minimised and in the case of tritiua no lead shield ing is required at all, inasmuch as tritium does not emit gams radiation. i : The consensus of all the Investigators working on nuclear batteries would indicate that such batteries, at least in the present stage of develop ment, are not a very practical and certainly not a competitive source of elec tricity. In fact, one of the speakers defined electricity generated by nuclear batteries as "radioelectrivlty" because "they generate a trivial amount of electricity." Further indication of the lack of practicality for nuclear bat teries is tbs fact tk^t to operate an ordinary flashlight, the tritiua required would cost two hundred million dollars. 1 Po t the pest several years work has been continuing on the nickel- eacteium battery which is developing Into a dependable and competitive eouree j of stored electricity. Many technical problems have been overcome and except 3 for high cost t he ricks1-cadaium battery's performance is equal to that of i the lead acid battery. The papers presented on this battery dealt primarily with research Investigations on charge retention, development of a "dry 1 charge" battery and study of plate characteristics. Of particular interest was the fact that rechargeable, hermetically sealed rdckel-cadmlvi' batteries are now boing made in the United States. It present "D" and "F" site flaablight batteries are boing made by Qould-Natlonal Batteries, Inc. They ap parently exhibit good shelf life and will handle $0 percent of their rated capacity after one year. Their cost, however, which it about {3 per flash light type cell, prices them out of all but specialised markets. Zinc-ellver oxide batteries also have been given mere attention with emphasis on developing suitshie high rate batteries for special military sys tems. Particular emphasis is being placed on remote control activation of this type cell. The program la still in its embryrnio stages.
