In order to avoid any misunderstanding as to the required procedure, it might be well at this time to review Certain points in connection with the handling of drums for repairs. First, it should be borne in mind that the minimum time of steaming for drums should he ten minutes. The bungs should be left in the drums except when the steaming, testing, or welding requires their removal. If at any time there is any odor detected while working on the drums they should be shunted back for further steaming. If there are any indications of the presence of lead in the air, manifested by sneezing of the workmen, even when the building is apparently free from odor, the drums should be returned for further steaming prior to completion of the repairs. Finally, we would suggest that the steaming operation should be done on one day and the repairs on another, in order to make sure that as much work as possible will be done with the drums cold. Of course, the drums will be heated as a result of the welding, but this cannot be avoided. With the adoption of these suggestions, together with a careful control of the work and selection of personnel by your supervising force, we believe that you can continue to make repairs to our drums satisfactorily.
