Ulu (6) INCIDENCE OP ASBESTOS RELATED DISEASES WITHIN TAC We have updated our claims for compensation for asbestos related diseases at all locations. The total number for the factory locations total 75 with a further 20 for Spray operations/ out of which 54 have been settled. The first claims were submitted in 1945 and related to individuals who had been employed since 1918. Out of this group there have been 33 deaths from asbestos related diseases and we have employed more than 75,000 people since 1945. The number of employees since 1918 is obviously substan tially higher than 75/000 but equally obviously the number of claims does not represent the mortality due to exposure to asbestos. Whilst each of these is regretful it does indicate that the incidence of disease amongst asbestos cement workers is low in relation to other asbestos processing industries. An additional factor to be borne in mind is that the asbestos related diseases occur mainly after prolonged periods working in conditions which were considerably worse than standards of control which exist today. The statistics for each location are tabulated on the attached chart.
