Dear Dr. Edelman
I have the results on the last series of analyses on the samples
of urine of your two associates and yourself. These results are
quite satisfactory from my point of view with one exception, and
therefore, I shall not report them tc you at this time. With
the one exception indicated above, there is no suggestion of any
significant exposure to either lead or a r senic. I believe that
the exception is the result of the contamination of a sample of
urine, and therefore I am calling it to your attention. The
second sample obtained by

is very high in its lead c o n t ^ i ^ ^ m ^ ^ i t h i n normal limits in
respect to arsenic. The sample taken the day before by the same
m a n was normal with respect to its content of both lead and
arsenic. Therefore, unless M r h a d seme quite signifi cant accidental exposure in the c?arTymorning of August 6, thi3
second sample was certainly contaminated inadvertently. If there
was any accidental exposure to tetraethyl lead on the day in
question, I should appreciate it if you would report it to me in
some detail. However, if my suspicion iscorrect, this should
simply''be the occasion for advising M r . a s well as your
other associates of the necessity for extremeT^great care in the
collection of these samples. We have occasional contamination
in the Laboratory, for even under the most ideal conditions the
opportunity for lead contamination Is g r e a t . It may h e , therefore
that this was our error. However, it is worth while to have
everybody take great precautions, since otherwise we shall have
less useful information that we would wish to h a v e .
