(conoco) Interoffice Communication To From Mr. J. T. Zeien - Houston D. F. Myers - Lake Charles Date February 1, 1982 Subject PROGRESS REPORT - PERIOD ENDING JANUARY 28, LAKE CHARLES REFINERY PIP FE r~* .0 r'f7 c.:cf4- Crude Crude charge data are as follows. The mix of Humber gas oil and crude is being received into the refinery. Some questions still remain about February crude scheduling due to a short crude sup ply necessary for blending the Humber gas oil. All planning activities are awaiting a decision on whether the Texaco crude will be delivered at the refinery or Clifton Ridge. Total Bbls. Thruput Avg. Chg. Rate for January________ Past Week, BPD No. 2 Crude Unit No. 3 Crude Unit: 1,133,726 Crude Humber Gas Oil 1,610,902 34,035 Totals 2,778,663 Average crude charge per day this month Average gas oil charge per day this month Totals 39,375 53,143 4,862 97,380 101,653 1,261 102,914 Operations Summary A power failure shut down the entire refinery late Thursday night when one of the incoming feeder leads to the FCC substa tion failed. This caused extensive damage to several other feeder lines within the refinery resulting in a power loss to all units. Presently, damage assessments are being made but it appears the FCC will remain down for seven to ten days while electrical repairs are being made. During this downtime, the unit will be opened up and the refractory inspected in the J-bend area. The No. 3 Crude Unit will remain down until the FCC is back on-stream because of gas oil inventory problems. Until the power failure incident, the No. 3 Crude Unit operated routinely charging a blend of just over 50 MBPD of crude mixed with 10 MBPD of gas oil. Operation with this blend did not cause any problems. The No. 2 Crude Unit operation was normal until the power failure. MCD 000022533 Mr. J. T. Zeien Page 2 February 1, 1982 This unit is presently awaiting the stringing of some temporary electrical cable to provide power to the unit. The FCC Unit rate was just under 30 MBPD as limited by vibra tions in the flue gas waste heat boiler. Apparent conversion was 75% with an 85% efficiency. The riser temperature was re duced to 982F in order to reduce B-B yield. Catalyst addition rate was 0.9 TPD at a loss of 0.5 TPD. The first load of Hum ber gas oil was charged to the FCC this week and subsequent samples indicated the sodium levels were around 25 ppm. This material must have been contaminated during transport since earlier samples showed much lower sodium levels. Subsequent samples of the latest gas oil ship indicate the sodium levels are below 5 ppm. Data were taken for a complete test run on the FCC this week. The Alky Unit east Clark refrigerant compressor was shut down for repairs last Saturday. On Wednesday the Alky Unit was shut down when the V-8 compressor failed. The B-B's were being blended to gasoline until the power failure occurred. The Alky Unit will be inspected during the downtime to determine the cause of the high end point alkylate. The Thermal Unit was shut down in the power failure, but is now back on-stream and does not appear to have suffered any ill ef fects. Sulfuric Acid Plant is down and will remain down for boiler tube cleaning and some other minor repairs. The Casinghead Unit is back in operation following the power failure, but will probably be operated on blocked-out operation due to lack of feed. The Coker was on circulation due to drilling problems when the power failure occurred. The unit was able to remain on circu lation until power was restored. The unit is now back on line after a total production loss of 12-hours. The Calciner had to be shut down when cooling water to the feed spout was lost in the power failure. This resulted in a feed spout failure. The unit is now cooling down in preparation for repairs. Both Reformers and the HDS Unit were shut down. The No. 2 Re former and HDS are currently back on line. The No. 1 Reformer will remain down until the Crude Units are again placed in ser vice . The Power Plant was able to maintain steam pressure and boiler feed water during the power failure. Temporary electrical lines Mr. J. T. Zeien Page 3 February 1, 1982 are being run to the Power Plant switchgear since all other feeder lines to the Power Plant were also damaged. Late last week B-6 boiler ruptured a superheater tube and was shut down. B-5 boiler was already down with an economizer leak, so the steam load was handled with the low pressure boilers and imports from the Petrochemical Plant. B-6 has been repaired and was back in service at the time of the power failure. B-5 will remain down for additional work to replace tubes that were found to have ex ternal corrosion. Offsites & Inventories The Dock personnel handled one ship and fifteen barges during the week. Total delay time was 24-hours. Total gasoline inventory is 574 MB. Total distillate inventory is 348 MB and 183 MB of this mater ial is fungible kerosene. Problems were encountered this week with diesel product being off on the haze spec. After chang ing out one of the salt dryers, the distillate product is again meeting specifications. All propane is now good and being shipped to the various cus tomers. The Ponca decant oil was transferred to the Coker charge tank this week and is now being utilized in the Coker at low rates. Heavy and light blend shipments have gone to the Bayou as sche duled. Acid shipments have been routine. D. F. Myers Process Superintendent Lake Charles Refinery 39 cc: Managers ON WLW JHS GC DBK DRG FEB WWW DFC EAH KMcK KDW EEM KCH LH RB LTW MCS TB HBH
