The enclosed supplemental report completes a Federal inspection of the No. 1
Mine and Mill, I.D.^No. 30-00611, Balmat, New York, conducted on July 17-20
and 26, 1979. The inspection was made pursuant to Public Law 91-173 (83 STAT.
742) as amended by Public Law 95-164 (91 STAT. 1290).

fiber filters were counted in the Albany, T1V, laboratory for fiber per
ML count. The following filters wero submitted to the MS1IA, Denver Technical
Support Center for fiber identification. This was accomplished by an Electron
Microscope Scon.

The pei-cent varied as expected due to the nonhomogeneity of the atmospheres and
local differences in the roch being mined. The local percentum should change,
from day to day, but the average should be reasonably consistant. The filters
were all averaged and the result was 22.3 percent, 'toxic fibers which was used
for each location.

The percent of toxic silica was determined to be below 1 percent in'each area sampled so toxic silica was not included in the .calculations. (The 700 levfel . crusherman was found to be below the TLV, which would bring him into compliance).
