PFAS is a group of highly persistent chemicals that are found worldwide in the environment, many of them also having additional toxic properties. PFAS are used to create water and dirt repellent surfaces in various products including clothing, kitchenware and cosmetics. They are also used in fire-fighting foams which causes ground water pollution. The group restriction is intended to prevent regrettable substitution. At the moment, the ECHA Committees are preparing their opinion - RAC's opinion is concluded, the public consultation on the SEAC draft opinion was just closed (19 Nov). Next steps in the procedure will be the issuing of the compiled RAC and SEAC opinion for transmission to the Commission. Airbus may have an opinion about the REACH restriction to cover six perfluorinated and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS). One of the uses of PFAS is in fire-fighting foam used on aircraft.
