Review of the document indicates that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has recently classified man-made mineral fibers, including fiber glass wool, mineral wool, and ceramic fiber, as~ a Group 2B, "possibly carcinogenic to humans." The OSHA Hazard Communication standard requires the IARC classification to be included on the MSDS. Since these materials are widely used throughout Shell, your assistance in determining appropriate action at Manufacturing locations is requested. We specifically request advice on appropriate communication to employees under the requirements of HAZCOM. The issue of insuring suppliers' MSDSs are updated should also be addressed. (MJLf- A. F. This group will serve to gather infor mation from a wide variety of sources, including the government, medical authorities, manufacturers, and other construction groups that work with products composed from these materials. The purpose of this group is to analyze the information on MMMF and to dessiminate their findings to NICA members. This taskforce has been organized to assist in clarifying what contractors and distributor/fabricators should do to be in compliance with up-to-date procedures for working with MMMF. Ted Brodie, New England Insulation, Canton, Massachusetts is chairing this taskforce. Other members are Ian Dewar, Dewar Insulation, Markham, Ontario; Jim Hipolit, Irex Corporation, Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Ron King, Distribution International, Houston, Texas; and Wayne Killion, Shook & Fletcher Insulation, Co., Birmingham, Alabama. The first meeting of this group was held at NICA headquarters on June 24,1987. On Sep tember 2 this group will meet in Washington, D.C to discuss this issue with repre sentatives from the Thermal Insulation Manufacturers Association (TIMA).
