1. Why are protective gears necessary? Everyone knows that accidents occur when unsafe behavior occurs in an unsafe situation.
Even in the caee of reckless behavior it is possible to prevent accidents from happening by ensuring that machines and equipment are perfectly safe,
For example it may be possible to make a work environment so safe that you will not trip over or crash into anything, even if you run around with your eyes dosed, Or to ensure that nothing will fall on you even if you do not wear a safety helmet. Implementation of this kind of ideally safe environment is called feohoroofing.
It requires, however a huge budget to make machines and equipment perfectly safe in this way. So this is not possible in many cases, (It is mandatory however, as described in the previous Issue, to equip machines with protective devices such as safety covers when this is stipulated by law.)

Therefore, workers are required to wear protective gear(e) to prevent accidental injuries,
Protective gears are ineffective if they are not "capable of fully protecting workers from expected dangers, easy to use and convenient.*'
These requirements make it necessary for those ordering protective gears to listen carefully to workers'opinions
2, Operations requiring protective gears and types of protective gears Following Article 34 of this company's Health and Safety Provisions, workers are obligated to wear protective gearis) when engaging in the operations described below,
Protective gearis) used in each operation must fit the situation in each workplace.

Safety shoes (with no m etal parts) and safety helm ets must be made of insulating materials. 2. Rubber shoes and Japanese digitated sock-style shoes are frequently used, but their insulating performances should not be overly trusted, If worn out or damaged, they are not effective. 3. Use rubber sleeves in conjunction with rubber gloves to fully cover arm s and shoulders in order to prevent electrification, 4. All protective gears m ust not become wet, Rubber protective gears must be stored In such a way th at it does not become stained with oil or deteriorated due to sunlight. Sleeves m ust not be folded. 6) Operation where many high-tem perature objects likely to cause bum s are handled 6) 1. Use work helmets made of flam e-retardant or noncombustible materials (vinyl chloride m aterials or the like), 2. Heat-shielding screens and goggles m ust be made of flame*retardant materials. 3. Gloves, a m covers, aprons, slips, pants and footwear must be made of heat-resisting materials. 4. H eat-resistant clothing (fiberglass, cotton or asbestos coated or impregnated with

aluminum) is effective in blocking heat. 7) Operation where workers are exposed to harmful radiation 8) Protective clothes, goggles and gloves containing lead must be worn to prevent injuries from X-rays, radium and other harmful radiation (As stipulated in Article 31 (Protective gears) of Prevention Orders against Injuries Inflicted by Ionizing Radiation)
1) Operation where gases, steam, dust or foreign materials may be dispersed 2) 1. A duet mask must be worn in workplaces where harmful dust is generated, 2. A gas mask must be worn in workplaces where a harmful gas or steam is generated. 3. A pair of dust*proof goggles must be worn to prevent injuries from dust or liquid chemical dispersed by such operations as grinding, chipping and *** handling work. 3) Operation where hair or clothing may be caught by a rotating part 4) 1. While working, wear a protective gear such as work cap th at covers hair completely to prevent it from being caught by a rotating belt of machine, 2. When working near a moving part of a machine, do not leave sleeves or the hems of pants open.tTle them up with string without leaving its ends dangling. 6) Operation where intense light is generated by electric arc, gas or acetylene melding 6) Use a light shield or wear goggles to prevent eye injuries (electric ophthalmitis and cataract) inflicted by harmful light rays (ultraviolet and infrared rays) encountered in arc or gas welding or work around a welding furnace.

E ar plugs must be resistant to moisture, cold, heat, oil and must not be worn out after reasonable frequencies of washing and disinfection .3) Operation where substances may cause injuries or pmsonmg/eontamin&tion by being absorbed by skin or by penetrating it. 4) Work clothes, gloves and footwear made of impermeable materials such as vinyl chloride lined with rubber and polyethylene must be worn in operations where injuries may be inflicted by mercury, arsenic, yellow phosphor or hydrochloric acid after coming in contact with the skin, or gases, vapors or dusts of these substances may cause poisoning/contamination after being absorbed by the skin or penetrating it. 6) Operation where workers are highly likely to be contaminated with pathogens

Do not wear gloves when working with a drilling machine or milling machine, Machines where gloves are prohibited must be clearly marked as such, (Article 130 of Health and Safety Rules)

3. Rules to be followed regarding protective gears
1. Wear safety clothing already designated by this company.
2. If workers are provided with safety protective gears, they are required to wear these without fail.
There have been many instances of workers suffering accidents because they did not wear protective gears such as safety shoes and goggles. Also, there have been numerous instances where workers who were using protective gears properly have escaped injury when an object fell on their feet or when iron duet could have entered their eyes.
It is absolutely necessary to wear protective gears if these are provided to you.
3. Protective gears provided to you must be kept clean.
4. Use the protective gears provided to you only, Do not borrow those of other workers or lend yours to them.
6. If you notice any anomalies in your protective gears, report them to your immediate

superior at once and follow the stipulated procedure for repair or renewal.
Before day's work begins, check your protective gears thoroughly for any damage such aa tears (daily check). Also, after you are provided with protective gears, you must report any damage or breakage to your immediate superior and follow the stipulated procedure for repair or renewal.
Next, related points expected of worksite supervisors will be described.
1. First of all, supervisors must make perfectly sure th at protective gears are used by workers properly, lb do so, supervisors have to explain thoroughly dangers associated with a particular job using examples of past accidents related to it, especially examples where accidents were avoided thanks to protective gears that workers were using, and make workers recognize, most of all, the necessity of protective gears. When a worker is not wearing protective gears, supervisors have to explain to the worker why the gears are necessary and never foil to instruct them to wear the gears.
2. If protective gears are kept in a certain location in a workplace for workers to pick any at will, workers tend to handle them more unreeponsively or recklessly than they do if their own personal gears are provided. If this 1b the case, protective gears may be left broken or dirty making it impossible to use them properly.

Chapter 12 Health Checkup
1. Why are health checkups necessary? In Ordinary cases, you visit a clinic for a conventional medical examination on feeling that something is wrong with you (subjective awareness of symptoms) in order to determine whether you are ill or not. Sometimes, therefore, this visit may turn out to be too late because your illness is too advanced.
In a health checkup, varieties of medical checks are carried out to discover and prevent occupational and general illnesses at an early stage instead of waiting for individuals who consider, themselves healthy to experience symptoms and request medical examinations,
When the results of checkups are obtained, reviewing oftreatments for patients and the health condition of a workplace becomes possible. This ia why it is said that "a health

checkup is the first step of health management/
Following Article 66 of this company's Health and Safety Rules, every employee must take a health checkup set up by the company and preventive inoculations as instructed by the Heath Manager, When the employee cannot take the company-sponsored health checkup, he or she is obligated to submit a medical health certificate instead so that every employee is checked for his or her health condition (Article 56).
2. Types and contents of health checkups
(1) Health checkup at the time of employment (Article 53)
1) Employee category 2) Check items 3) General employee 4) 1. Stethoscope and percussion test (sensory, circulatory and respiratory organs, nervous systems etc) 2. X*ray test 3. Height, weight, chest circumference, eyesight, color blindness, hearing, forcefulness in voice, ***, lung capacity and grip strength tests 4. Tuberculin in n er skin response test, red cell settling speed test, sputum test 5. Kitchen employee 6. Health checkup employing a stool test other than the testa listed above
As for workers to take a job in an environment subject to dust or radiation, a special health checkup is carried out when they take the job or are employed.
(2) Periodic health checkup Workers who have taken a periodic health checkup are classified according to whether or not their checkup results contain any anomaly, After this classification based on checkup results is finished, complete physicals are carried out.
Workers are divided into those who are exposed to special harmful substances and those not to decide on test items of a checkup. Special checkups are carried out for workers engaged in a harmfiil substance handling job to prevent illnesses specific to this job (occupational illnesses),.

(3) Health checkup contingent on personnel relocations (Article 60 of Rules) When an employee is transferred to a different department, he or she is required to take a health checkup if it is deemed necessary. This checkup is carried out to check if the physical characteristics of the employee are fit for new duties and is closed related to safety.
(4) Checkup for employees returning to work (Article 69 of Rules) This checkup is carried out for employees who wish to return to worit after an absence from work due to an illness for more than one month.
3. Judgment rendered on health checkup results and aftercheckup measures 0 ) If it is judged that detailed checks are required based on checkup results, the checkups must be carried out to conclude whether an employee is healthy or not, and if not, to diagnose what illness he or she is suffering.
(2) If many workers from a specific workplace are judged as unhealthy, there is sure to be some problem with the workplace. Causes of Illnesses mu&t be investigated thoroughly and Implement countermeasures accordingly
