I Houston, Texas November 30, 1982 ASN AMERICAN INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE ASSOCIATION Request for Organizational Membership PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT Dr. U. V. Henderson Beacon, New York . TEX-73 Texaco Inc. has had an Industrial Hygiene program since the 1940's; furthermore, it is a strong program and it continues to develop both at home and abroad. The level of recognized professionalism among the industrial hygiene staff members . has also continued to grow each year. Some staff members have achieved full certification in the comprehensive prac tice of industrial hygiene and most others have become certified industrial hygienists-in-training by successfully taking a core examination. The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) is the recognized professional organiza tion for industrial hygiene. This organization offers various types of membership opportunities to both individuals and companies. The entire industrial hygiene staff belongs to the AIHA, either as full members or associate members. However, Texaco Inc. is not presently an organizational member. The annual fee to become an organization member of AIHA is $150.00. A list of other organizational members is attached. The benefits to Texaco in becoming an organiza tional member of AIHA would include recognition in profes sional circles of Texaco's commitment to occupational safety and health, reduced prices on AIHA publications (see attached list), reduced registration fees for the AIHA Conference and reduced fees for the AIHA Employment Service. Additionally, Texaco would be able to nominate some of its staff .members to serve on standing and technical committees within AIHA. These AIHA committees (see attached list) frequently provide, the most decisive input to governmental regulatory agencies ,, during the review of proposed rules and regulations concern ing worker safety and health. Recently, during the deposition of a Texaco Inc. industrial hygiene staff member, much was made by the plaintiff's counsel about Texaco not being an organizational member of AIHA unlike most other oil companies (see attached). Con sidering the benefits that can be derived from being an S WA-TEX 005486 WA-TEX005486 Dr. U. V. Henderson 2- - November 30r 1982 organizational member of AIHA and the low annual cost re quired ($150.00) , I request that such a membership in AIHA be approved.
