The enclosed letter. In response to a letter addressed by
Mr.. C. D Lowry, Jr., of Universal Oil Products Company to
Ollle Jones, and forwarded to me, ls; self explanatory, I
believe, although its urgent importance may not be entirely
clear to you.
I should appreciate it if you could communicate with Mr. Rowley, and if possible aid in a full investigation of this matter. W need the facts urgently for advising the responsible officers of our armed forces, and also for transmissal to our allies. On the basis of a full report from you and/or Mr Rowley, I may find it necessary to Investigate the status of exposed per sons. Therefore, any contact you can make with medical or
hygienic officers in such a camp might be the means of obtain ing valuable data and perhaps-of getting samples of blood or excreta from exposed persons. This will require discretion in dealing with the personnel of the kitchen, and perhaps tact in dealing with officers. I rely upon to to supply these. `This situation, if it is as reported, should not have been permitted to exist, for it is definitely dangerous,and I think,unnecessary. You should be able to find out when unleaded gasoline has not been supplied and you should do what you can to see that it is supplied. (Of course, they may have the proper kind of newly designed stove, and if so, this is a tempest in a teapot.) In any case, I hope you can help me out by obtaining a full and de tailed report on this problem.
Sincerely yours.

Mr. 0. 13. Lowry, Jr., Universal Oil Products Company, 210 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois.
Bear Mr. Lowry;
Your letter of January 21 to Mr. E. 0* Jones of Ethyl Corpora tion was referred to me for Information. I am grateful to you for your interest, since this gives me an opportunity to follow up a problem about which I have reason to be concerned. I have little doubt that the deposits are largely lead, unless the stove is of special design. The matter has considerable hygienic as veil as technical Importance.
Very truly yours.
