The following are ay comeats on Mr* Schaefer*s memorandum
of December 3# with regard to the use of extra drivers on our tank
trucksi
Naturally my knowledge of this situation is extremely limited
and my comments are merely a personal reaction to the handling of a prod
uct such as ours with respect to its value* weight* and aost important,
its toxic properties*
i
Frora past discussion it is evident that members of the Safety
Committee sad the major executives of the company feel that to transpor
tation of fluid on the public highway is not a matter of complete satis
faction to us* Ihile such shipments are obviously better than the use
of druse, they are not as safe as tank cars* It is recognised that the
probability, of accidents is -greater on the highway m& such accidents , .
would produce a sore serious hasard than if they happened on the railroad*
It, therefore, would se advisable to have a sufficient number of m u ~
available with every tank truck shipment of fluid to insure proper proteO-
tic and policing, based sot os to ordinary routine of travel, but on
proper handling at the time of possible accidents*
'
the company has gone to considerable length in the prepayment
of freight when fluid is transported in bulk quantities and it would seta
that the expenditure for one driver would be an extremely small amount
for insuring proper handling so long as it is necessary for us to continue
truck transportation of fluid on public highways*
