Patel SUBJECT: Asbestos Monitoring at Slstersville Plant Dear Jack: Attached are the results of asbestos exposure monitoring conducted In the Steam Plant, third level and in Polymer 2, Building 48, at the Slstersville Plant, while the Construction Department employees stripped Insulation on April 2 and 25, 1984. The monitoring part of the survey was done by the Slstersville Plant Industrial Hygiene group and the analysis of the samples were done in our group at the Technical Center. The monitoring results for Building 48 show rather high levels of asbestos fibers In the work environment. Since the employees were adequately protected by respirators, gloves, and coveralls, the actual exposure of employees did not occur. However, we must do all we can to reduce the level of asbestos fibers In air to well below the permissible exposure level. At present we have 2.0 fibers per c.c. of air as a permissible exposure level. OSHA is working on a standard which would require us to reduce the exposure levels to either 0.2 or 0.5 fibers per c.c. of air. While It cannot be ascertained what caused high levels In the air, we recomend a closer look at the asbestos wetting technique and repeat monitoring as soon as we can.
