In answer to your request for information that is readily available for use with the public, that is currently being developed by the consortium communications committee in consultation with our PR contractor, APCO. Attached is a "Key Messages" document. I will certainly keep you informed as additional documents are developed and approved for release. File: APCO Main Messages June 2.doc (Compressed) We (the consortium made up Shell Chemicals, ConocoPhillips, ChevronTexaco, ExxonMobil, BP) are currently operating under a low profile mode. An opportunity that you might want to avail the organization in China would be to meet with the Chinese APCO office and the principal investigators, Dr. Richard Irons and Dr. Otto Wong. We had a session in Shanghai in May, but at the last minute the Shell rep was unable to attend. We did know something about this but were disappointed not to be included in the decision-making process as clearly this project as reputation implications that may impact 0 r be linked to our other operations in China, in particular other high profile projects such as the West-East Pipeline Project. Our only input was to question the advisability of such a study more than a year ago when we heard about it through Barnaby. We have had no further involvement. In the meantime, can you urgently, can you supply us with a public (media) position on this project and questions and answers so we can make sure we are ready for media inquiries given that there is clearly opportunity for media to misunderstand the rationale and benefits of the survey. We have several projects now in the media spotlight covering very sensitive issues and this may well be linked to them. We need to be prepared.
