Bear Charlie* Because of my preoccupation with other matters as well as a short vacation out of town, your recent letters have gone unanswered. With respect to the use of teraeplate in the fabrication of gasoline cans, it may very well introduce an important factor in tse the effects of the general use of these cans for all manner of purposes. There is no doubt that the terneplate will introduce lead into water and other edible materials, particularly those that have some solvent effect, such as fruit juice and the like. It is unfortunate, therefore, that it has been necessary to make this change. I know of nothing that can be done about it, except disseminating infor mation about it whenever and wherever the opportunity presents itself. I am certainly glad you have called this point to my attention. I shall remember it and call attention to it when ever it is possible to do so. Vith reference to the refilling of gas mask canisters by Trinidad Leaseholds or any of your other companies, I see no reason why this should not be done if and when there is ade quate information on the quality, that is, the adsorbing capacity of the charcoal. As you are doubtless aware, the charcoal used in masks in this country i3 subjected to rather careful testing, and must meet definite specifications. So long as satisfactory charcoal Is used, it makes very little difference to me where it comes from, and in these troublesome times we cannot afford to be picayunish about minor details. In general, however, it would be my opinion that in normal times it would be wise to stick to a standard product.
