VonCannon, B-401 IHS File RECEIVED FEB 051988 Sit, PAtijEl, EXPOSURE TO FRIABLE ASBESTOS FIBERS DURING RENOVATION AT C-107 STOCKROOM IHS File CI-2696P On December 30th and 31st, 1985 and January 2, 1986 stockroom employees, carpenters and contractors were exposed to friable asbestos fibers during renovation of C-107. The renovation job at C-107 was being done by Carpenter Shop personnel, B-106. Contractors from the Yard and Utility Department were dismantling some stockroom shelves in the area while the renovation work was being done. A contractor electrician was also present to deactivate electrical circuits in Che building. After approximately three days of working in the area and removing portions of the ceiling for air condition duct work, it was discovered that the stucco ceiling had been sprayed with 1/4" asbestos insulation. Industrial Hygiene Services and Environmental Services were notified and the job was discontinued until a permit could betfibtained from the Texas Air Control Board to remove the asbestos insulation. The loose asbestos insulation already removed was cleaned and properly disposed of according to the Texas Operations Asbestos Handbook Guide. After the clean-up operations, air samples were taken to determine the asbestos levels inside C-107, since stockroom employees are still working in the back section of the building. The average concentration of airborne asbestos fibers was 0.009 fibers/cc. The highest level found was 0.012 fibers/cc. c" ATING UNIT OF THE OOW CHEMICAL COMPANY =Quafita== Means More Ai Oow W. J. Landry -2- January 17, 1986 After the asbestos removal permit has been granted, the asbestos removal operations will be conducted according to the Texas Operations Asbestos Handbook. Employees removing the asbestos insulation will be monitored by Industrial Hygiene Services.
