I realize this has been a pressing program on you and we appreciate very much your co operation throughout. Incidentally, the three draft copies which we had received are being destroyed here. When the additional 250 copies have been assembled I would appreciate one more copy for our use here. Regarding the situation in Adm. Biggs' group in Washington, my most recent discussion with them indicates there are no questions on the part of the medical people of the Services relative to the use of 4. 23 grams of lead in gasoline. Adm. Biggs and Herb Blair feel that since they have had the draft of the report for quite some time there will be no further comments from them. On the application side of the question, there is in circulation now a draft of a revised Federal specification in which is included the change in lead concentration from 3. 17 grams to 4. 23 grams. It is believed that this revised specification will receive no unfavorable comments and should issue in the immediate future. As you know, we did not attempt to get the Military fuel specification changed at this time. This will be our next effort and involves more work with the Military. Dear Doctor Cooper; I am sending to (2) copies to you and an additional two (2) copies to Dr. Douglas Lee, of the final version of the report entitled "On the Potential Hazard Associated with the Intro duction of Tetramethyllead as an Antiknock Agent into Commercial Motor Gasoline, with Respect to the Absorption of Lead by the Handlers of Such Gasoline." The final version differs from the first in that a few sentences were deleted (for reasons of professional courtesy), a few clarifying additions (especially to tables) were made, and a number of typographical and printing errors were corrected. I should like the original copies returned to me or destroyed (the latter will be simpler and entirely satisfactory to me), so as to get them out of circulation, inasmuch as the final report will be distributed somewhat widely although not in large numbers. If you wi3h to have additional copies of the final report, please let me know while there are ample numbers available. Eight Mile Road Ferndale 20, Detroit Michigan Dear Dan: We have completed, at last, the preparation of two-dozen (24) copies of the final report of the California TML investigation, and I am sending three (3) copies to you, one for Dick Scales, 1 for Howard Hesselberg and one for you. Additional copies will be sent later to various people of Ethyl Corporation, du Pont and Standard Oil Company of California, just as soon as the final job of assembling the remainder of the copies has been completed. Twelve (12) copies of the final revision have gone to Mr. Herbert Blair, and six (6) copies to the Public Health Service. This leaves us with but three (3) copies, but we shall soon have the others. Two-hundred-and-fifty copies (250) have been struck off. I have asked that all the copies of the earlier report be returned to me or destroyed completely, and I ask the same of you. The final version will have some international, as well as national, distribution, and I do not want any of the earlier copies to turn up to embarrass our friends on the -vest Coast (who objected somewhat vigorously to a few of the statements made in the initial version) or to reflect what they have considered to be a certain lack of courtesy on my part. I do not believe this to be a very serious matters, but I have done my best to eliminate any criticism. I shall be pleased to learn, from you or Mr. Blair, the outcome of the deliberations in the Pentagon. 1 should suspect that they have had some more serious matters to consider lately.
