Delaware 19898 POLYMER PRODUCTS DEPARTMENT July 24, 1981 PERSONAL & CONFIDENTIAL TO: DISTRIBUTION LIST DOCUMENTATION OF "NO SMOKING" ADVICE ASBESTOS SCREENING PROGRAM In our previous communications on the Asbestos Screening Program we have stated that, for individuals who have been exposed to asbestos, smoking increases the possibility of developing asbestos-related disease, including cancer. The guidance to physicians was that these people should be advised to refrain from smoking. The purpose of this letter is to reemphasize the impor tance of getting this message to smokers and to outline a more definitive method of doing so. We request that on PPD sites, as employees and pensioners with asbestos exposure are identified, whether or not lung abnormalities have been detected, that the plant physician take the following steps: Advise the person to refrain from smoking, and the reason for the advice. Note in the medical record that this advice has been offered. Follow up the contact with a written communication, perhaps using Du Pont Form G-248, Physical Examination Record.
