Ohio. 16th January, 1937 Dear Dr. Kehoe, I have written you a separate letter,which is enclosed herewith, on the subject of our medical supervision in Germany, and I have forwarded a copy of the letter to Dr. Muller-Cunradi. When writing to Dr. Spelth&n might I ask you to be kind enough to send us a copy of your letter as well as one to Dr. Muller-Cunradi, as suggested. We had a meeting in Berlin yesterday at which it was decided that all the oil companies would use lead in their gasoline as from 1st March. It is improbable that they will be in a position to get going properly from the 1st March, but there will be leaded gasoline on sale from that day, and by the spring or early summer the bulk of the gasoline in Germany will contain some lead. . We are not planning to sell any leaded gasoline under the Ethyl trade name, and lead will be used simply for the purpose of bringing their base gasoline up to a pre-determined octane number. The final mixture, as sold to the public, will still contain benzole and alcohol, and of course, as mentioned earlier, no reference will be made to the name "Ethyl." All gasoline in the country is to be coloured red, regardless as to whether it is premium or non-premium. This new development, of course, will mean the erection of a number of new mixing plants, and work on these will be commenced immediately. Dr. Muller-Cunradi advises me that Dr. Spelthan himself will be unable to spare the time to visit all these plants, but if you are agreeable he can undertake to hold himself responsible and arrange with one of his staff to carry out quarterly inspections. You may have heard by now that we are to start immediately building a lead plant in Trance, and also our friends Montecatini are going to build one in Italy with our assistance. The French situation seems to be developing nicely, and there is a possibility that we may be able to put lead in all regular gasoline in that market within the next few months. i Dr. R. H. Kehoe. ' T o ... . 2 rATK 15-1-37 It has been agreed amongst the oil companies in Germany that they shall not use more than 0.2 c.c. tetraethyl lead per litre of locally produced gasoline (as opposed to imported gasoline). This is in order to avoid antagonising the Benzole people.
