TATUM INTERNATIONAL D-4042 ASBESTOS PROGRAM You very appropriately raised a question, during the EQC presentation on the asbestos program, regarding the situa tion in non-U.S. Du Pont locations. Time did not permit an adequate explanation, but this memo may help. The Du Pont Europe physicians have been kept informed of the program as it was developed, implemented, and monitored. To our knowledge, they are also being more alert to possible X-ray changes which may be due to asbestos exposure. Social, cultural, and professional differences, however, make it difficult to have a program similar to the one in the U.S., but we can have a comparable program, and we do. Burf will be meeting with the Du Pont Europe physicians in Luxembourg in April, 1984, and the asbestos issue is an agenda item. We are asking the physicians to come to the meeting prepared to discuss any cases they may have and what their detection programs have been in the past and will be in the future. This will give a better assessment of the situation in Europe. Latin America is another issue. Our medical programs there are still coming into compliance with the Company's expectations and we don't believe they can handle this sophisticated program at this time. We are working with the plants and their physicians on the total occupational health program and will integrate the asbestos medical program in when we believe it can be handled. Social and cultural differences are a major factor in parts of Latin America. I agree that we may have a difference between CJ.S. and some non-U.S. medical activities regarding asbestos-related changes, but we have other differences which we believe are more pressing and require more immediate attention.
