INSULATION.MATERIALS BASIC LO-TEMPERATURE SECTION I-B-4ol Vegetable Cork Cork is of vegetable origin, granulated into large granules and compressed into cork board and pipe insulation form and baked under moderate temperature. The natural resin in the cork acts as the binder. Cork has a temperature range of from -200F to +100F. It has a wKn factor of 0.29 at 100F. Cork has very good compressive strength and will withstand consid erable mechanical abuse. If kept dry it is a good low temperature insulation; but if exposed to moisture for a period of time* the binder will fail and the cork will disintegrate. It is susceptible to vermin and termites, and has been known to smolder for several weeks after a fire was supposedly out. Cork is a very costly material and our use will be restricted. It will be used in conjunction with the foam insulations where abnorm al abuse is anticipated and to repair pipe and equipment original ly insulated with cork.
