The relation between crocidolite and mesothelioma seems to be pretty strongly established by experience in South Africa and elsewhere. The relation between chrysotile and mesothelioma is not clear. If it exists, it apparently is much less prounced than that shown by crocidolite.
The limit of 5 MPPCF that we observe in our operations is still recognized in the United States as satisfactory for chryso tile, but there is strong feeling that it is much too high for crocidolite. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see supplied-air respirators recommended for handling the latter.
In our own operations with chrysotile, I feel that we should try to control the dust to levels as far below 5 MPPCF as reason ably possible. That is, I don't believe we should be content with control that just maintains the level at 5 MPPCF. Actually, this figure is known as a threshold guide and not a level that strictly defines safe and unsafe conditions.
There is some thought that metals associated with asbestos either from the ore or from milling machines, etc., may be part of the problem. Investigation is underway to evaluate this potential; and as soon as I hear more about It, I'll let you know.

Is S MMPCF still considered good enough, or should we go to renote-controlled equipment and air-line masks like the nuclear Industry uses? I'we seen one article which implies that crocldolite nay be the harmful variety rather than chrysotlle. Have you anything on comparative toxicology of various species of asbestos?

REPORT OF DUST PARTICLE ANALYSIS
Dust count samples were taken on July 2, 1968. It should be noted that the
bagging area is enclosed and all personnel are required to wear respirators
when working in this area* Also an additional dust raising source was caused
by maintenance personnel removing a room in the southeast portion of the area.
Improvement should be noticed on subsequent investigations as a new dust
collection system is to be installed during the latter part of the month while
the plant is shut down for vacation, ; ;

Dear Mr. Riddle:
I have recently learned that Dr. Christine Einert (M.D.)
of the California Department of Health plans to visit asbestos operations in the various areas in California. I have no idea what time the visits would he made but I know for sure that Dr. Einert will be primarily interested in asbestos dust and its control. Therefore, I would attempt to keep the dust control system at its most effective operation,
I don't believe you will find Dr. Einert difficult to talk to but I feel I should tell you that she has considerable
experience in industrial health.

of Union Carbide Medical Department has followed thic area very closely
and has maintained a very close check cm the working conditions at the
King City plant.

in England. There. only two ports will handle normally bagged
asbestos, at the other port* the Union of Dpafc-.Workers-have refused
to handle the shipments of asbestos.

W o have been permitted to bring in several shipments with not very favorable results. The last shipment* because of rather poor handling and packing, was in bad shape with many broken bags and much free asbestos. Copies of reports on these shipment shave undoubtedly
already dome tp your attention.

summarising the findings and feelings concerning asbestos in theU.K,

the July asbestos meeting ip Oxford we will implement the
suggestion made by Mr. Mayors and agreed to by Dr, Dernehi
that Union Carbide Join in the cooperative standard Sample
comparisons to the extent of arranging for standard camples
to bo forwarded to Niagara Falls for trace element Analysis.
In Joining the program to this extent we will be able to keep in
dose contact with the progress of this study and will aleo be
aware of any adverse finding*' which may develop.

During July and August of this year, we plan to caiVy out an occupa tional health survey of the entire asbestos mining industry in California. To this end, we will contact you personally during early July in order to answer any questions you may have, and to set a date for our study of your facilities.
Very briefly, our study plan is to evaluate air-borne dust concentrations and ventilation air flow rates. In addition, we will want to obtain sputum samples from certain exposed personnel and review with you your preventive medical program.
The results of this work will be summarized in a report covering Cali fornia's asbestos mining industry without identifying individual firms. In addition, we will provide you with the results of our evaluation of your facility and of your preventive medical program.
Our purpose in undertaking this study is to insure that workers in the industry are not exposed to harmful levels of asbestos dust, and that you are provided with up-to-date information regarding effective preventive medical programs. We know that you are as interested in this matter as we are, and we look forward to a pleasant working relationship.
